Sarah Palin was arguably the most influential person in 2008, but no one notices because she wasn't influential enough to overcome the deficits of her running mate and win the election.

Until Palin, 45, burst onto the scene, Obama was headed for a Nixon/McGovern landslide. Palin may not have changed the election result, but she killed what otherwise would have been a rout.

John McCain was so preposterous a candidate (at least on a Republican ticket) that Palin was responsible for far more votes than the usual vice-presidential candidate. The biggest red flag proving her popularity with normal Americans is that liberals won't shut up about her. Palin is a threat to liberals because she believes in God and country and family — all values liberals pretend to believe in but secretly detest. There's a reason there's no "Stop Olympia Snowe before it's too late!" movement.

The American voter can be hornswoggled occasionally, but we can generally spot a real American, and that's what Sarah Palin is. She really was a housewife who went into politics because she didn't like the way her taxes were being spent. She really did take on the old-boy network — the oil companies and her own party — and won. And yes, she really did walk the walk on abortion when she found out she was carrying a Down-syndrome baby.

The combination of Palin's attractiveness as a candidate and her ability to expose liberals made her a celebrity among Republicans. The only thing I have against her is that she threatens to surpass me in attracting the left's hatred.

I think she's wrong about everything, as usual, but there is no argument that Palin made McCain much more attractive to the morans who were already geared (and wired) to vote Republican. It's not like she stole any votes away from people who were supporting Obama and then suddenly FLIPPED when Palin was named as the veep companion to McCain.

I mean, seriously. Can you imagine?

The future of the Republican party, if it has any, is McCain -- Meghan McCain, not John McCain. In other words, progressivism with a place at the table for capitalism, even if that sounds absurd to most of us.

My last post talked about Jim DeMint's strange and dialectical "win by losing" credo. His way of "thinking" was nicely summed up in the Washington Post today by former Reagan and Bush 41 staffer Ed Rogers:

Notice to Republicans: Arlen Specter changing parties is good for the Democrats and President Obama and bad for us. If you think otherwise, put down the Ann Coulter book and go get some fresh air. There's always a delusional element within the GOP that thinks if we lose badly enough the Democrats will gain so much power they will implement all their crazy plans, the people will revolt and purest Republicans will then be swept back into power. But at least he didn't blame the whole situation on Barack Obama's failure to be "bipartisan."

As a son of the Deep South, I am intimately familiar with the cultural phenomenon of believing in victory-through-defeat and the glamor of "noble" failure, a spiritual disease that inflicted many of the white folks of my region for more than a century. Maybe it's no coincidence that Jim DeMint comes from the state whose fever swamps first fed that affliction. I'd love to see the voters of the Palmetto State (my own native state), refute that suspicion before too very long.

... my wife wanted some books, so I perused the nonfiction section of Walden Books. "Section" is too strong a word, it was a shelf 2 1/2 feet wide with more right-wing garbage than anything else, with Coulter's book featured. Then we went to the food court, which had FUX News on the big screen drowning out the muzak. This was in San Antonio, one of the pockets of Democratic voters in Texas. I don't know for a fact the mall is trying to convert people, I just know I went to 2 places and found propaganda in both.

So after all that, I'm glad you posted this tid bit of nit wit. McCain brought the ticket down? Do cats lift their leg to pee, and dogs cough up hair balls in this bizzaro world of which she speaks?

Palin brought in votes? Maybe, but my right-wing evangelical brother and his wife say she pushed them over the edge ...to vote for Obama after voting for Bush twice.

Um...I believe in God and country and family - who know I was a threat to liberals since I AM a liberal. No wait - Ann says I detest those things so I must be confused. :shrug: Who does this beotch think she is telling us what we think and believe?!? It seems most folks either believe in God or not, but not sure why they'd detest him. Country? WE are the country, but we might not like what right-wingers like her do in our name with our country. Family? Some people hate their family probably with good reason, but I think most people love their families (even if it's just the one they've created for themselves) because they're human - unlike Coulter who I believe is unmarried with no kids. That's fine if it's your choice, but considering that I hardly see her as some expert on family.

I agree that McCain was preposterous as a candidate for the Republicans considering that what's left of them are extremists and I wouldn't catagorize him as that. However, they had a large pool of candidates and they were all over the place. On what is she basing her assertion that Palin benefitted, rather than hurt the ticket?

Then she attests to who is a "real" American. Who appointed her to that job? The abortion comments are humorous since Palin recently admitted to struggling with the decision before she had her baby. What's there to struggle with if you don't believe in abortion? Sure seems like she made a CHOICE.

I'll admit she's attractive in that naughty librarian/Mrs. Robinson way which, let's face it, is why they picked her along with the fact that she's pro-life and pro-gun. The ultimate right-wing token candidate! The fact that she has ZERO policy knowledge and they nominated her anyway speaks VOLUMES about her selection.
