Facebook has shut down a Ku Klux Klan group set up by schoolchildren in the Isle of Man.
The 'Isle of Man KKK' page urged members to cleanse the island of newcomers.

Almost 100 youngsters had subscribed to 'Keep the Isle of Man white and free from foreigners' which carried a picture of a hooded Ku Klux Klan member.

The group's creator told members online: 'There are too many comovers (sic) on the Island. They are taking all of the jobs, houses and most of all they are taking advantage of our ****ing Island. .... join us and help clense (sic) the Isle of Man.'

Students at all six secondary schools on the island - including the public King William's College - had joined

Ah, the KKK. Such a grand example of an import from the USA.

1. It looks, though, like there might have been more than a bit of adolescent "irony" at play, though
I'm sure they're shocked that no one "got" their affected insincerity:

One message posted on the group's "wall" said: "Damn blacks and indians (sic), coming over here taking our jobs - who the **** do they think they are?"

Paul Kane, deputy headteacher at Ballakermeen High School said staff had alerted Facebook administrators and talked to each student listed as a member of the group. But he wouldn't say whether action would be taken against them.

He said they had signed up to criticise the group but claimed racism was not an issue at the school.

The student who wrote about 'damn blacks and indians' was, he said, a mixed-race student who was 'trying to be ironic rather than serious'.

He said: "There are one or two ambiguous remarks from our students but we think these were intended as sarcasm."

"I'm pleased that the vast majority disagree with the sentiments of this group and want nothing to do with it.
