Eric Cantor is certainly intelligent, but he is not leadership material for the Republicans because he doesn't see any political advantage in trying to snap them out of their stupor.

The components that they have to rely on for their base are the very components that brought them to the beat-up condition they're in. To reboot they are going to have to jettison the fundie nutbags and the hate radio talk hosts, just for starters.

Which means they are in electoral peril.

These shows are all about the fight. It's a battle of the spokesmen, and without two well-matched opponents, they have no show. They really have more in common with pro wrestling than with actual public-affairs programming.

Of course, they could try providing informative discussion and in-depth analysis, but that would be ratings death.
