Alleged kidnapper just looking for dog
Alleged kidnapper just looking for dog

Bakersfield police said Saturday a local man had been looking for a lost dog Friday, not trying to lure a 12-year-old boy into his car.

In a special news release issued shortly before noon Saturday, police say they'd been contacted by the man just after midnight. His girlfriend had seen a TV report and thought they might be describing him.

"Information which was corroborated by several sources indicated that the subject was indeed looking for his girlfriend's dog, who had escaped confinement from her backyard, earlier in the morning," the release said.

Police had released a composite image of the alleged suspect Friday, believing he'd tried to lure a schoolboy waiting for his bus around 7 a.m. near the intersection of McKee Road and Krystal Amber Way in southwest Bakersfield.

1. Krystal Amber Way? Leave it to Bakersfield to give a stripper name to a street.

7. Once my car dropped a rod in Bakersfield.

We walked to the nearest structure which was a bar and that was the first time I saw a "no hookers" sign. It was an icon of a lady with big hair smoking while wearing high heels. I had to look at it for five minutes to figure it out.

When I asked the barkeep if our family was dressed okay to get into a restaurant, he said, "Ma'am, is this your first time in Bakersfield?"

I'm sure there is still one broken down Volvo station wagon in Bakersfield!

2. Something similar once happened to me.

I was with my little girl at a playground beside a parking lot next to a busy street when I noticed that among the children there (no other adults), there appeared to be a toddler who didn't belong to anybody -- just wandering around. So I asked the several older children there if any of them knew the toddler -- and the older kids all said no and backed away from me -- like I was someone to avoid. This was before everybody had cell phones, so I had no idea what to do other than see if the toddler belonged with one of the older kids. I couldn't put the baby in my car and drive off to the police station with her! I asked if any of the kids could go home and get their mother to help me, but no one would. Later, I wouldn't have been surprised if those kids told their parents about the strange lady who was trying to talk to them in the park that day.

4. I was afraid to leave so we just waited there
Edited on Sun May-03-09 11:32 PM by pnwmom
for at least half an hour or so past the point my daughter started asking to go home. All the other children had left -- it was just my daughter, me, and the toddler. And I was getting more and more worried about what to do, since taking the child anywhere didn't seem to be an option.

Then the parents turned up. They came from a baseball field a couple of fields away. They said they'd been watching their baby from where they were! (They would have needed binoculars to do that!) How could they have kept the child from falling? Or wandering into the parking lot? They were insane.

But I couldn't think of anything else to do except stay with the child till they turned up -- and then let them leave with her. Without a cell phone or any other adult to help me, there was nothing else to do, that I could think of.

6. I had that happen - I'm an older lady, walking down a neighborhood street, sunny day, kids playing.

a little girl, maybe 10, comes along pulling a younger girl in a wagon. younger girl is friendly & says "hi, what's your name?" i say, "hannah, what's yours?" in my nice old lady voice.

big sister says, "stranger danger, chloe!" gives me a dark look, & pulls the wagon faster to get away from the scary old lady who no doubt wants to kidnap & murder them.

what a world.

9. I was dressing after a shower in Camp Curry at Yosemite

and saw a mother beating her two year girl with a hair brush. I went over to her and said, if you need to calm down, I'll watch her right here for you. She looked me up and down as if I was going to eat the child and snarled, "SURE!". It was creepy. I was young and that's all I could think to do. But at least, she stopped hitting the child.

15. It sounds like you interrupted her action without causing her to get
even angrier at the child -- great outcome!

10. Bakersfield: It figures
Given the history of that area with an overzealous prosecutor, an inept police force, convictions of innocent parents and teachers over trumped up child sexual abuse charges, literal witch hunts, human sacrifice scares, fear mongering and basically a complete lack of common sense, I'm surprised that the guy wasn't lynched on the spot.
