Iowa congressman fights to preserve traditional marriage
Chad Groening - OneNewsNow - 5/1/2009 7:00:00 AM

An Iowa Congressman says the people of Iowa, not activist judges, should determine whether the state should allow homosexuals to "marry."

Republican Congressman Steve King is concerned that Iowa will soon be a same-sex marriage mecca for the rest of the country. As a congressman, he does not have any direct influence on Iowa lawmakers, but he intends to use his position as a bully pulpit to try to convince state legislators to pass a marriage amendment to the Iowa Constitution, defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman. But before that happens, King believes a lot of damage will be done.

"A UCLA study foundation predicted that, before we could amend our constitution, there would be as many as 58,000 same-sex marriages in Iowa," he explains. "And of that 55,000, 95 percent would be out-of-staters who will come into Iowa and then go back to their home states where many of them will start the litigation machinery to try to break down the constitutional protection of marriage."

Along with a constitutional amendment, King believes the legislature should also enact marriage license residency requirements. "It would cut out, according to the UCLA study, 95 percent of the same-sex marriages that will otherwise take place in Iowa starting sometime three days into this," he notes.

So far, the Democratic-controlled Iowa legislature has refused to act in favor of traditional marriage, King concludes.

1. Well it was Republican Appointed Judges, (Judge)
who wrote the opinion that the state court upheld. So King needs to take it up with his party, not the Democratic legislature.

Just saying

2. I wish they would be able to come to Ohio and get married.
And bring all their families and friends, too.

We need the business. Hotels, restaurants, florists, wedding planners, I mean, what the hell, only a fool would turn down that kind of business potential.

I guess things must be so peachy-keen in Iowa that Steve doesn't think they could use the money.

3. Steve King is a political toilet
Steve King allows his political career to serve as a receptacle where the worst waste products of the Republican party gather.

The bigots, the ignorant, the paranoid, the misguided--King attracts the worst stink from the bottom of the barrel.

Someone needs to take a big Scrubbing Bubbles brush to the whole lot of them.
