Kittens Of Escaped Pregnant Cougar Die
Handler Cited For Not Having Permit For Animal
POINCIANA, Fla. -- A pregnant cougar that escaped from its handler in south Osceola County was captured Sunday night after a trap was set for the animal, wildlife officials said, but the three kittens died.
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the kittens died Monday afternoon and the cougar was spayed.
Jungle Adventures in Christmas holds a permit for the captive-born cougar named Sierra, but the animal was in the possession of a woman in Kissimmee when it escaped, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said. The cougar was being taken to a veterinarian for a cesarean section when it somehow slipped out of its two leashes and ran off.
The cougar returned to the area from which it escaped, and the second attempt to trap the animal was successful, according to the Florida Fish & Conservation Commission.
