James Inhofe - a picture postcard of everything I hate about Republicans

from ThinkProgress:

Inhofe wrongly claims that a ‘majority’ of Americans think repealing DADT would hurt ‘unit cohesion.’

Yesterday, the New York Times’ Room for Debate blog hosted a conversation about how repealing the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy banning openly gay men and women from serving would “affect the military ranks.” Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK), who supports continuing the ban, claimed that “a majority of the American people” agree with “section 571 of the 1994 National Defense Authorization Act, which states”:

The presence in the armed forces of persons who demonstrate a propensity or intent to engage in homosexual acts would create an unacceptable risk to the high standards of morale, good order and discipline, and unit cohesion that are the essence of military capability.

But Inhofe is wrong about the views of the American people. Last week, the Quinnipiac Polling Institute released a comprehensive poll showing that not only do a majority of Americans support repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, but 58 percent of Americans reject “the argument that allowing openly gay men and women to serve would be divisive.” This includes 56 percent of voters with family in the military.

1. And Inhofe knows this based on how much action he saw in Vietnam?

2. How are the views of a majority of Americans relevant to this question?
A majority of military personnel would be a better question.

4. Another new RW meme is that
now that gays can marry in some states, they'll both join the military and fellate and sodomize each other constantly, to the detriment of the troops. I kid you not.

6. I can't claim authority on this one way or the other, just as most can't know about education
I hear so many ill-informed views on education, that I don't weigh in on this one, knowing practically zilch about the miltary.

When the team holds each other's lives in the balance, I relaly can't say if this issue matters all that much or not.

Active duty people should speak out on this one.

7. When the history, demographics and polls are against you
Just make shit up. I think there's something in the 10 Commandments that allows for that. You know, if you really, really want something to be true, just make shit up. It's called the Inhofe Method.

9. I think believing it will disrupt "cohesion" is different from NOT supporting it's repeal
Edited on Tue May-05-09 01:03 AM by RomanHoliday
He's still an idiot, but it's possible that many people feel it could disrupt unit cohesion, but still feel that it's the right thing to do. Personally, I'm iffy on the "unit cohesion" thing as well. Who knows? It could have some negative effects at first and the military is a very conservative place, but that doesn't mean DADT shouldn't be repealed.

There's cost and benefit to every issues. Just like racially integrating the military likely caused some conflicts back in the day, but they got over it and the world is a better place because of it.
