1. Obviously trying for "value" associations
"valic" is to value as "truthy" is to truth.

3. I went straight to Valium, myself.
Invidious Valic.

Vomitous Valic.

Verminous Valic.

You know, you can really do more with this name than AIG.

10. Actually, my first association was also to that particular benzodiazepine.
But I suppressed it.

4. VALIC has been around forever.
It was already one of AIG's companies/subsidiaries.

8. Like Worldcom bought out MCI
and then went back to MCI after their accounting scandal. I hate that they get away with this.

7. what do you do when you have an inferior product in an aggressive marketplace?
Edited on Mon May-04-09 08:41 PM by JonLP24
If you have a large share of the product you buy out the competition.

And if you don't?

Reduce price, you increase market share.

Does it sell off?

Of course, otherwise you're operating at a loss. And worse, as your prices drop your product drops you eventually lose customer credibility. The new CEO of Worldcom was faced with this very problem. The company was linked to one of the biggest fraud cases in US history so he proposed to 'change the name'.

I guess that is why companies change names. Relevant info at 2:05 at link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e40s0RELPCs
