(Toledo, OH Roman Catholic bishop) bans gay-ministry talks
From the Toledo Blade:

Bishop Leonard Blair, recently picked by the Vatican to investigate the doctrines of a major U.S. nuns' organization, has banned a workshop on gay and lesbian ministry scheduled to start today at the Sisters of St. Francis campus in Tiffin.

The three-day workshop was offered by New Ways Ministry, a Maryland-based organization that describes itself as "a gay-positive ministry of advocacy and justice for lesbian and gay Catholics."

Sally Oberski, director of communications for the Toledo diocese, said Bishop Blair sent a letter to Sister Jacquelyn Doepker, head of the religious order, asking her to cancel the workshop.

In his letter, the bishop said "the positions of New Ways Ministry are not at all in accord with the guidelines for pastoral care which the bishops of the United States issued in 2006 regarding 'Ministry to Persons with a Homosexual Inclination.' Nor does New Ways Ministry present the full, authentic teaching of the Catholic Church on homosexuality."

We just joined the CSA that these nuns operate, and I'm feeling pretty good about that decision right now.

5. On one hand he claims he supports the nuns...but on the other
Edited on Tue May-05-09 09:51 AM by bluebellbaby
the other hand he thinks this the decision to stop the "support group" for gay catholic's is perfectly acceptable...

And his last reply pointed this out...he said it himself...

He supports the religious oppression of gay people...

What Am I missing?

Hatred and intollerance has to be stopped...in whatever "guise" it uses!

28. God bless ya!
You guys are making fun of me...I get it now...

I'm clueless...

I admit this...and I don't mind "opening my mouth and removing any doubt"...my life would be sooo boring...if I didn't..

Besides...would you rather that people misunderstand and "assume" something that's not true...without trying to point it out?

I know, I know...leave us live in our own stupidity...

8. thanks for the support
I suspect that by belonging to this CSA, I may begin to understand why some progressives continue to support Catholic organizations despite the backwardness of the hierarchy.

Such as the Catholic Workers.

14. And such as the nuns that the hierarchy are picking on now.
The nuns in general, including their leaders, are far more progressive than the male hierarchy.

22. Good for you!
There's a CSA around here run by a different order of nuns. It's a bit far for us, so we belong to another one.

Most Orders of Sisters are pretty damned cool.

Ignore the other poster.

10. You feel "pretty good about that decision"
Are you referring to your decision to join CSA or the Church's decision to close down the support group?

If it's the former, then I truly apologize...

I haven't finished my first cup of coffee yet this morning...

But then why would you support the religious oppression of gay catholic's...?

15. Good luck with that, Mr. Blair
You're on the wrong side of history, the Bible, and society. But you toddle on and "ban" workshops, and discussions, and whatever else you think is going to stop God and Nature. It didn't work all that well for Popes who had more power and authority than you could ever dream of, and it's not going to work out for you.

But at the very least, you have been notified that your efforts are doomed. It's up to you to decide whether you want to continue them.

18. What's going on in the Church today reminds me of the very early days when the
Jesus people got tossed out of the synagogues. I think the hierarchy is going to toss so many of the Jesus people out of the Roman Catholic Church that it will be reduced to a cult with a lot of Renaissaince art. Meantime, Jesus's Church will survive just fine without them, thank you very much.

19. It will be interesting to see how these nuns react to this "investigation" of them.
They tend to be very progressive and they're not wimps. At least, not the nuns I've known.

21. I'm not scared of nuns. But I do respect them, and the ones
I knew were strong women. It will be interesting to see how far the hierarchy tries to push them. They could be leaving in droves.

26. The internal battle will continue.
The bishops keep untenable positions that many priests, nuns, and lay people will continue to tune out.

31. I especially like this quote:
<<"We might not be able to use a Catholic facility, but we'll reach Catholic people, and the work we do's in line with the best of the Catholic tradition," he said.<<

A Church, after all, is more than just bricks and mortar. Wherever two or three are gathered...
