Flood waters are threatening homes on the Kenai Peninsula tonight. According to the National Weather Service, a release overnight from the Skilak Glacier-dammed lake sent large volumes of water into the Kenai River. That water has caused ice on the Lower Kenai River to break up and form large ice jams flowing toward Soldotna. Home video by Kenai resident Bill Toppa shows the water flowing into his backyard. He says the high water is normally 100 feet from his patio. Officials say as pressure builds, a large ice jam from Soldotna Creek to just above Swift Water Park is threatening to break and could cause severe flooding. "They need to pull their portable property out of the area -- vehicles, docks -- remove able boardwalks and any kind of property that can be moved should be moved away from the river banks. And for those in low lying areas, they should be paying very close attention to what the river is doing," said Toppa. So far, there are no reports of serious damage to houses or businesses.

It is a beautiful unspoiled place. We went rafting on the river and saw bears fishing and eagles soaring...

11. I live right here in Soldotna. There is a road that goes down to the

river called Big Eddy. There are houses flooded out right there with ice dams that are going to break up shortly, some of them holding back water more than eight feet deep. You have never lived until you stand on the banks of the great Kenai River and watch boulders of ice float past that are bigger than your house. My mom had a pedicure yesterday and the woman next to her had one of the flooded houses. I cannot emphasize enough, my friends, how serious global warming has become. I find the cavalier way that some of the posters on this board are willing to overlook the actions of people and their behaviors because they like them, people who are making this happen. This is so damned awful. Rivers freeze and unfreeze all the time up here, but this doesn't happen until march or april. THis is happening to my town and my peninsula and fuels my anguish over a lot of other topics here. I wish it were otherwise.

Atolls in the Pacific are sinking -- have been sinking for some time actually. A whole culture is going to disappear because of global warming.

I've never been to Alaska, but I grew up in Hawaii and studied Oceania, so that's my perspective. Lately I've been reading about the starving (and drowning) polar bears and seals up your way. It's sick.

I can't believe this story. This IS January and this shouldn't be happening during the middle of the winter. And I read another online story about how Anchorage, Alaska had also had received more snow this winter so far than they had received all of last winter. People are worried about their roofs caving in, among other things.

Now here in CO, we have had blizzard after blizzard after little storm after little storm. The normal pattern for us in the past has been to have the snow and with our generous amount of sunshine that we get, it usually melts the snow rather quickly. It is not unusual to have your shorts on within days after a storm. This year however, we have major drifts yet, from the snow before Christmas. This year has been extra snowy though, without the warming that we usually receive.

Yeah, it is not just global warming, but rather climate change. It is very frightening.
