Howl911: CHINESE EXPORTER: "THERE ARE MANY OTHER EXPORTERS"
Associated Press reports: Geng said the company based in the eastern province of Jiangsu had not manufactured the gluten but had instead bought it from companies in neighbouring provinces. She said Xuzhou Anying sold it onward to another Jiangsu company, Suzhou Textile Import and Export Co. “There are many other exporters and I don’t see why they would just blame us,” Geng said.

Comment from Itchmo.com: It could be just another way to deflect the blame, but if it’s true, the real magnitude of the contamination is still unknown and raises the possibility that it may have gotten into the human food supply as well as other pet foods. The FDA is currently only blocking shipments of wheat gluten from XABTDC.

Interesting to note that this company was formed in 1995
ADM also formed their second subsidiary in China in 1995

ADM Dalian

ADM Dalian was established in 1995 to provide a complete solution for animal nutrition feeds for the Chinese and Asian livestock, poultry, dairy and aquaculture industries.

1. Why should they be honest with us? We have lied to them, and sold them shoddy goods and medicines.

2. My honest but humble opinion
is that China rushed into modernizing - the West jumped on it, dumped all toxins outlawed elsewhere - and for not being informed better - they fouled up their environment.

It sounds like this company processes wheat - someone supplied them with the wheat - who? If it's pesticide it could be local -

Why is China also the largest importer of wheat from the US. It does not make sense.

What is going on?

What also bothers me is that wheat gluten is not yet labeled to be the actual source of contamination with 100% certainty.

The FDA better clarify the chain...

4. From what I am reading, wheat is turned into gluten in factories.
It is labor intensive and therefore much cheaper to buy
from China than to make here in the US. The wheat is locally grown in China which does not have the same standards the US does in
terms of pesticides and additives.

It is about profits, which usually are not passed on to the US consumer,
but handed to the top executives of the company in the form of obscene salaries and bonuses.

And yes I agree with your thoughts Rumpel.

I just wanted to make the point that before the US gets too huffy about China, we should keep in mind what shoddy stuff we sell to China.

10. FDA STILL refused to IDENTIFY the US Contractor who Brought it In!
WHY? How many "middle men" does it take to get "wheat gluten" to broker a deal with major Canadian Supplier of Pet Food to ALL OF US?

This Chinese Company is feeling "caught out" by "Global Interests." Maybe they WERE the original supplier and maybe they weren't.

HOW did the stuff get into the US?

The basic questions - who, what, when, where, how

Maybe today our pets are sick, tomorrow it could be us humans

12. I have a friend with 3 sick cats who didn't feed recalled food.
But they all started vomiting the same day, and the vet diagnosed renal failure.

I wouldn't buy anything with wheat gluten for anyone, furry or human.

14. They hadn't, but I told them how.
They didn't know there was a way to report. I have another friend whose 8-year old cat died after eating food on the recall list, and she hadn't reported either. Most people don't know who to report to.

15. Poisoning a competitor is not uncommon in China
I've said this a few times here, but I don't think anybody has noticed.

Since I have in-laws in China, I tend to follow China stories more closely than most on DU... but, I've seen several stories over the years about a restauranteur having somebody poison the food in a rival restaurant, in hopes of putting them out of business.

It's not a big leap to think the same of food makers. Are there rival factories in China? Or, could it be some Chinese working for a competitor of the US company?

They probably were counting on the fact that there is no enforcement in China, and lax enforcement in the US.

I would have never thought of it but the way you sketch it out, it makes sense.
