Apple takes top places in all laptop categories at Consumer Reports. Also top in tech support.
Consumer Reports continues to shower praise on all things Apple it seems. In a report in the June issue, the Magazine says Apple won the top three places in the 13 inch laptop derby. The unibody MacBook was in first place, followed by the MacBook Air, with the white plastic MacBook in a solid third place.

CR also named the 15-inch MacBook Pro as top laptop in the 14- to 16-inch group, and the 17-inch MacBook Pro walked off with the honors in the 17- to 18-inch category. The HP Pavilion publicized in the first Laptop Hunters ad from Microsoft came in 4th in the category behind Dell and Lenovo laptops. The Sony VAIO FW370 that was the star of the 3rd Microsoft ad came in 5th in the 14- to 16-inch category.

Apple also took the honors for best in tech support.

This won't bring smiles to the folks in Redmond, who are going all out to convince people that Apple computers are not a good value. It should be noted that none of the Apple laptops were rated a best buy, but they all scored the highest in each category and were recommended by the magazine. Of course Apple has repeatedly said they are not trying to win on price, but on quality, and Consumer Reports seems to accept that as the case.

1. Mac is great...
if you are afraid of computers, if you don't like tinkering, and if you like to be led by the hand in everything you do. I own both Mac and PC and because I like to tinker so I am more of a PC fan. Mac is great if you don't want to be bothered knowing how stuff works.

I use both PC and Mac and Mac users seem to think that PC's are nothing but trouble. That's bullshit. If you know how to use your PC and you know how it works it's easy to avoid spam, spyware, and viruses. They are two different animals for 2 different types of people. Mac people have a tendency to think themselves superior but the fact is both systems have good and bad points. And while there aren't as many viruses on Mac they crash just as much as PC's do. The guy who talked me into getting the Mac kept telling me it would never crash. Well on the first day I spent 5 minutes in Photoshop before the Mac locked up on me. He was sitting next to me when it happened.

Oh and BTW I spent a lot more than $400 on my PC and it'll smoke any Mac on the market in performance and reliability. And I built it with my own two hands. Some Mac users seem to think that taking pride in the fact that I am able to build a PC is a bad thing, funny how those are the kind of people who are always calling me for computer advice.

I'm a convert and my experience is different from yours. My Lombard is 11 years old and works.
I have had this Macbook (2.4 ghz black duo) since November and it has never crashed. My only complaint was that the set up thing where you connect it to your old Mac and everything transfers over didn't work because my old Mac was a 2000 iBook and too old.

I confess, I didn't think much of the iBook Snow with the duel operating systems. I found it to be slower than my 1998 Lombard in some applications including Photoshop and the iBook did lock up now and then. There was some glitch which I suspect had to do with me having OS 9 and 10 on the computer at the same time.

I find the value of Mac to be not only the quality of the experience, but also the longevity of the product. I have bought seven macs for my family since 1997 and they are all still fully functional.

Honestly when people start making fun of someone because they take pride in building things themselves it just shows how fucking lame and shallow they are.

You just plug a couple of components on to a Chinese

And then think you're cool for doing that.

42. I paid $350 for my laptop.
I haven't had problems with viruses and drivers.

It boots quickly enough from hibernate mode that spending several hundred dollars more just to speed things up a few seconds doesn't seem prudent. Some people like to spend that kind of cash to get their computer to boot faster. My income is limited enough that I prefer to use the money on things like food and my mortgage payment.

I'm pretty happy with my purchase -- not so fanatical about it that I'm going to put a windows logo sticker on my car though. I'd probably be happy using a Mac if someone gave one to me.

I view a computer as a tool, not a foundational element of my identity.

33. You know I am the proud owner of a macbook, a netbook
and the nightmare

Here is what I have found

The Macbook works PERIOD

The Netbook works (it runs xp, and would be running linux but there is this particular app that does not play well with wine... and even less with crossover, so surrendered, but it is XP, it works, period... and it IS a netbook... it has a gerbil for a processor... I know. Fine for a glorified word processor though)

Oh and the qpp is liquid story binder, specialized writing app... if you are a writer I highly recommend it

And then the nightmare, otherwise known as the gaming rig... don't ask... but if hubby wasn't a gamer I'd kick that thing to the curb... PERIOD

What I despise of the redmond campaign is that they are focussing on STATS not performance

My mac has 1 gig of RAM... and your point is? It is as fast as the Vista machine with... 4 gigs and a quad... and it IS the damn fracking OS!

Oh and futzing with drivers... oy

Haven't bought a new Mac since about 1998. When the Intel MacBooks came out (2006 I think), I bought a slightly used, mint condition iBook G4 for only about $600.00. Saved me over $400.00, and it looked and worked just like a new one. There was even about two months of warranty left on it.

21. What I'm terrible at but trying to get better is SELLING my old macs.
I tend to buy a new one, stop using the old one and put it in the closet before it eventually gets sent to goodwill years later. If you're organized enough, it's probably smartest financially speaking to buy a slightly used or refurbished model, use it for a year or two and then sell it while it's still worth a few hundred dollars.

I've still got two ole Blueberry Macs I've owned over 10 years. Now they're worth nothing. I did notice a place selling the same iBook as mine for $450.00, so maybe I should think about a used or refurb MacBook while the iBook is still holding it's value and bringing a decent price.

I had the original Mini for a few months before I decided to go with a laptop. The original Mini was okay but needed more RAM, and I didn't like the idea of popping the bottom off with a putty knife. When a deal showed up on the iBook, I moved on. My nephew has one of the newer Minis and it's far better than the early models.

I hate to see them just end up in a pile of ewaste in China or something when they are still perfectly good, working machines. Unfortunately I need to upgrade fairly frequently for work. I guess I should look into donating to Dem Headquarters, although a lot of places are wary about taking on donated computers aren't they?

57. Rumors are a favorite sport among tech writers.
Of course if Apple wants to keep a secret, they can. How many knew that the Intel version of OSX was always on par with the PPC version from day one? They knew there was an Intel version, but they didn't know if they were going to switch platforms or offer the Intel version along side the PPC. Other products and advances kept the Intel rumor off the front page.

That's because I built it myself, and got a gigantic bang for my buck.

I shudder to consider what a quad-core AMD Nvidia 9500GT x2 SLI 4GB RAM system would cost if it came from Apple. Thanks, but no thanks.

Oh, and Windows 7 looks to be Micro$oft'$ best OS yet. I'm using the 7100 release candidate build right now, and it seems to have fixed most of the issues Vi$ta had.

Of course I prefer linux, but I can;t game on it very well yet. Gaming is a holy grail of sorts in linux, which is another reason I studiously avoid all things Apple.

35. Memory management, probably
I'm not willing to emulate an OS or run one on top of anything else unless I absolutely have to. Were I professionally required to use a Mac, I would do my level best to avoid it; absent that, I would very grudgingly run XP or 7 using bootcamp.

But no, as a gamer, that is simply not sufficient. I require 60 frames per second throughout my games or I am a Sad Panda.

49. I get edgy when I need to have one OS to run another OS.
Besides, if I *did* have a situation in which i needed both, I'd just dual boot. I like the idea of Bootcamp, but for some reason can't see myself using it to run Windows apps on a regular basis.

There are better solutions. I find it hard to believe that Windows apps running under Bootcamp actually run better than when they are running on a native Windows machine; I'd have to experience that firsthand to really believe it.

If you have that sort of setup, by all means, benchmark and let us know. It would be a gigantic slap in the face to Micro$oft, if nothing else.

68. Sorry, I meant "I'd just use Grub"
I prefer not to rely on a commercial application to manage my OS selections. That usually does include my Windows partitions as well.

46. It's not emulated. Bootcamp runs windows natively.
But yeah, it probably wouldn't make sense to buy a mac just to run windows full time! But it's nice being able to dual boot.

48. If I want to dual boot, I'll set up another Win-lin box.
If it's a choice between Window$ and linux or Window$ and an Apple OS, I'll choose win-lin every time. It's one less commercial license to worry about.

50. Depends on how hard your games push your system
Crysis is tolerable on my machine with most video options set to high (including volumetrics) and water set to very high.

Crysis requires a PC from four years in the future, which can also enter orbit by itself, in order to play it as it was intended to be played.

I get 60fps out of The Last Remnant in Windows 7 with DX 11. It makes me smile to be able to say that. :)

23. I just realized I'm on #9!
That is my 9th personally-owned Apple computer, not including dozens of different machines I've gone through at various jobs, and my wife's computers.

Apple IIe, Mac SE, some Performa something or other (sucked), a Power Computing clone (really sucked), G4 tower, G4 laptop, G5 tower, Dual quad-core Xeon, Macbook. Plus since I've known my wife she has had a G4, an iMac G5, and now a xeon tower like mine. Damn, that's a lot of computers gone to the landfill!

45. Then why the fuck couldn't they fix my iBook?
Edited on Wed May-06-09 11:01 PM by Sen. Walter Sobchak
I keep hearing about this saintly Apple but everybody I encountered over the course of my iBook ownership was a fucking moron, especially the "Mac Geniuses" at the Apple Store.

I lost count of how many times they replaced the logicboard and when ever I took the piece of shit to the Apple Store there was an entire mob of other iBook owners with the same problem waiting for their moment with the "Genius" so they could turn in their machine to NOT be fixed.

Replacing one defective logicboard with another defective logicboard is NOT a repair.

47. I've Used Macs Since 1984...
I think I have had a total of a 6 crashes in all those years.

Not unlike the VHS vs. Beta battle, the Beta (from Sony) was a far superior product, but more expensive than the VHS system. Of course, the cheaper product won out and we suffered with a lower quality picture for years before the DVD. Mac is simply a better product, period.
