American Kills Elephant With Bow For A Bet
Teressa Groenewald-Hagerman was so proud, she posted pictures on the internet showing her beaming beside her kill in Zimbabwe.

The 39-year-old huntress said she crept into a herd of 37 elephants, knelt down, and shot the grand creature from just 12 yards.

It staggered 500 yards before it collapsed, then she left it to die overnight.

Ms Groenewald-Hagerman is the first woman known to have killed an elephant with a bow and arrow.

The Kansas-born woman slaughtered the animal to win a bet with a male friend who said she would be unable to pull the heavy bow required.

For eight months she worked out for four hours a day so she could pull a £450 PSE X Force bow.

The lethal weapon has a 'draw weight' of 90lb - more than twice the amount pulled by female olympic archers.

On the hunting website Hunts of a Lifetime Ms Groenewald-Hagerman wrote: "A man by the name of Larry, who is a videographer for Orion Multi Media, bet me I couldn't shoot a buffalo or elephant with a bow.

"He indicated only one or two women had completed the buffalo with a bow and no woman had ever taken an elephant with a bow. Of course, I couldn't turn down the challenge."

The blonde has received praise from other hunters in online posts.

If you're going to hunt, then kill it quickly. And she should be forced to eat her kill.

71. Same excuse is given for Steven Green's rape/murders in Iraq
He was so upset at having his buddies killed, that he felt it was justice to go do that to Iraqis.

Then the local Iraqis were so upset with that crime, that they grabbed, killed, and kicked the heads around of a couple US military people.

Around and around and around. As you posted upthread "I wish it had trampled her until near death, and left her to suffer for hours and hours."

Which is quite different than publicity making her life a living hell.

She set out to harm this majestic, intelligent mammal in the most brutal of ways. In the contest between this beautiful, compassionate animal (and elephants are very compassionate with each other) and the cocky, I-made-a-bet human, I wish the elephant had prevailed. It didn't happen, so I hope she suffers in her life in other ways.

Oh, and lest you think I'm alone in my sentiments, look downthread.

him.

Wishing she has some sort of negative reaction to her from cruely killing an elephant is different than wishing her to be stomped to death and slowly die.

Same thing. There are levels of response, levels of reaction. That is what I am saying.

justice. Some dipshits up here shot a sow and left two orphan cubs to fend for themselves. she was an awesome mother, allowing people to fish around her and her babies and disciplining her cubs when they got into people's stuff. she was awesome and she crawled into the bushes to die of a gut shot from two cowards. Fuckers. Damned unforgiveable fucking bastards, of which she is queen.

28. It reminds me of this passage from the prologue to "The Prince of Tides"
(the novel, not the stupid movie):

When I was ten I killed a bald eagle for pleasure, for the singularity of the act, despite the divine, exhilarating beauty of its solitary flight over schools of whiting. It was the only thing I had ever killed that I had never seen before. After my father beat me for breaking the law and for killing the last eagle in Colleton County, he made me build a fire, dress the bird, and eat its flesh as tears rolled down my face. Then he turned me in to Sheriff Benson, who locked me in a cell for over an hour. My father took the feathers and made a crude Indian headdress for me to wear to school. He believed in the expiation of sin. I wore the headdress for weeks, until it began to disintegrate feather by feather. Those feathers trailed me in the hallways of the school as though I were a molting, discredited angel.

"Never kill anything that's rare," my father had said.

"I'm lucky I didn't kill an elephant," I replied.

"You'd have had a mighty square meal if you had," he answered.

My father did not permit crimes against the land. Though I have hunted again, all eagles are safe from me.

47. Bingo
Honestly, elephants are getting almost overpopulated in parts of Africa, and posing a danger. So I'm not going to begrudge someone hunting one. But I WILL begrudge leaving the thing to die overnight, and then (no doubt) not doing a goddamned thing with the meat. At the VERY least, that thing could fill the cookpots of a lot of Zimbabweans for a long time.

12. My thoughts exactly
If you're going to kill an elephant, then make it quick and relatively humane. Once the elephant collapsed, what stopped her from firing a second arrow at point-blank range?

Yes, it was a truly impressive feat in terms of human strength, but it's been overshadowed by her lack of respect for the wildlife with whom we share this planet.

Elephants are among the gentlest mammals to walk the earth, and their capacity for memory and emotional sensitivity has been documented fairly extensively. We as a species don't show elephants the respect they deserve. I remember riding on a young elephant's back at some festival in Texas, and I remember being kind to him and patting him on his thick hide (man, was it thick). Looking back, however, I think that elephant deserved better than to simply carry hairless primates on his back while walking in circles all day.

51. "Crept into a herd of 37 elephants"
No way they didn't know she was there....they just didn't view her as a threat. Which makes her "kill" all the more disgusting.

57. What an absolute waste.
Elephants are my favorite animals, and it sickens me that she did this.

But think of the other waste... four hours a day for eight months?
Imagine what that determination could have done if she put it towards something positive?
Even from the article, she probably could have tried out for an Olympic archery team!

But all this work just to shoot something, and then be too damn afraid of it to finish the job?
Just left it to die, so that she could take her disgusting picture the next day.

Complete and total waste...

Glad to know it fed people. A whole village - wonder what they thought about the gender thing.

73. She posted her story in Oct. 2007 here:

And her dates seem to indicate May.

This had to be over two years ago.

67. She needs to be made to "creep" back into that herd, UNARMED
From what I understand, the other elephants in the herd, at this point, will know who she is, and what she did to their relative, and yes, they will remember. Let her be forced to "creep" back into that herd, this time unarmed, and stand trial before them. If the herd lets her live, then she should be made to work at an elephant rescue for 2 or 3 times the number of months she "worked out" to commit this atrocity.

70. Hateful little thing, isn't she?
She could have just worked out until she could fire the bow and hit up a target range...of course, hitting a human-sized target would have taken more skill than hitting an elephant, even in a relatively vital spot.

And then she didn't even have the decency to put it out of its misery.

Let's bet her that she cannot kill an adult Bengal tiger with Swiss Army Knife. Surely, this "feat" has never been accomplished before - by either a man or a woman.

80. I know this is bad karma but I hope she has an unhappy, miserable life
What a sick and heartless thing to do. I hope every moment that this poor elephant suffered because of her selfishness comes back to haunt her in karma for the rest of life.

Zimbabwe eh? Mr. Mugabe obviously has a sadistic American sidekick

88.  "Sport" Shooting Elephants Is So....19th Century.

It's shit like this that drove me away from shooting activity years ago. Trust me, there are still plenty of alleged human beings who find what this woman did to be admirable (I note that there are a couple of posters coming perilously close to that attitude on this thread). Bad enough to shoot a magnificent creature like this with a large-caliber rifle, but to subject it to death by an arrow---a guaranteed lingering, painful death for deer-sized animals, much less elephants---is just unspeakable. I hope she never has another easy moment in her entire miserable life....

89. But it's a "manly" thing to do....
And apparently a "womanly" thing to do as well. I am told I am a hateful person at times because I believe people should get what they give - I guess I am hateful. And I guess I hope some thug looking for a thrill shoots her and leaves her to die a slow and agonizing death overnight in an alley somewhere. Her and her friend who dared her.

We have a "philanthropist" in Houston named Dan Duncan. Another energy "czar" like Ken Lay and the rest. Another crook. He gives millions and millions to charity. And shoots animals from helicopters. Mustn't allow an animal a fair chance by hunting them on the ground. I keep hoping he will fall out of the helicopter and then be mauled by the animal he was trying to shoot.

All these macho men and macho women. Adding another animal head to the wall in the den. To prove how macho they are.

I got from a right winger:

Humans are hunter gatherers. Animals are produced in abundance. It's called the cycle of life. What's the problem?

Do you kill and eat helpless tomatoes?
