http://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/5/7/728882/-PA-Sen:-Baseline-pollSestak and Torsella may be viable opponents. My understanding is that the national (I don't know about state) democratic party will not help any candidates running against Specter. So would the unions, netroots, PA voters and possibly state democratic party in PA be able to run a viable primary against Specter? When Bachmann said some stupid shit, her opponent in the general raised a million bucks in a day or so.
If someone else won, does anyone know if the national democratic party would refuse to offer them funding for the general election?
I think general senate elections cost something like $5-15 million. A reasonably big state like PA will probably cost $10 million or so. So is it safe to estimate the cost of a primary election (which is smaller and has lower turnout) at about $3 million? It seems unions and the netroots could get $3 million by 2010.
