my last three posts were goofy and now that my Con Law class is over, I have my final installment of "Old Guy Back in School." What I'm about to tell you is true, scary but true. About three days before the Con Law final a student came up to my little study group and asked, "What do you think about United States v. Virginia?" That's the case where a young woman wanted to attend Virginia Military Institute. I told him, "I think women should be afforded every opportunity that men have."
He said, "No way! Did you see A Few Good Men? The commander said that men defend those freedoms." I looked at him dumbfounded and asked, "You just used a movie to reinforce your bigotry!" He said, "It's true, women have no place in combat." He then walked off. We all though he was just kidding.
The day before the final we had a classroom study session and the teacher was discussing the VMI case again. The same student raised his hand and said, "If G.I. Jane taught us anything it's that women shouldn't be in combat." Yes, he got his "factual evidence" from a movie, yes, he is a political science major. Scary huh?
