1. We really need another moment like on August 7, 1974
From History Commons

Three senior Republican congressmen—Barry Goldwater (R-AZ), Hugh Scott (R-PA), and John Rhodes (R-AZ)—meet with President Nixon, and tell him that his chances of avoiding impeachment are “gloomy.” Pressure is mounting both in the press and among the citizenry for Nixon to resign.

All it would take are a few moderate Republicans to either press the House for thorough investigation or press Holder to appoint a prosecutor. Having it start from the Republicans automatically casts the investigation as non-partisan.

How different these days are from the 70's. I found the following at the Christian Science Monitor:

Meanwhile, Sen. Edward W. Brooke, a liberal Senate Republican, said Wednesday that several Republican senators had contacted President Nixon and urged him to resign. “The message has been sent to the President,” Senator Brooke told reporters.

2. "All it would take are a few moderate Republicans..."
Aye, there's the rub. Joe Finkelstein is too busy taking care of his frail and elderly wife, and Molly McDue can't take time off from any of her three jobs. All the other moderate Republicans have been excommunicated or exiled.

3. Indeed, that is the rub!
Those that do pop up are likely to be exiled faster than you can say "ditto-head"!
