Teen banned from prom for smelling like pot wants compensation
Teen banned from prom for smelling like pot wants compensation

On Saturday night, Brighton High School student Sarah Heideman, 18, and her boyfriend, Jason Schweinsberg, 20, were turned away from the prom because someone (it’s unclear who) smelled marijuana on them. Here’s the catch: Schweinsberg is one of the over 5,000 Colorado residents approved to use medical marijuana. A traffic accident left Schweinsberg with acute pain and multiple injuries, including a fractured skull, and he deals with the pain using the state-approved medical marijuana laws.

Heideman, humiliated and embarrassed by the refusal to enter her prom, spoke to the press with her boyfriend and an attorney. Heideman denies ever using marijuana; Schweinsberg admitted to smoking pot that morning but said it had been hours since he had used it when they tried to enter the prom. No marijuana was found on either of them.

Heideman plans to request the Brighton School District reimburse her for her prom expenses: her dress, dinner, hair, and prom tickets, totaling about $460. Attorney Robert Corry also suggested the couple would like an apology.

The smell police, they live inside of my head.
The smell police, they come to me in my bed.
The smell police, they're coming to arrest me, oh no.

2. Start with investigating whomever it was that denied then entry to the dance for
drug use. Most likely does not know what burning pot smells like anyway. Then let the law suit begin.

3. Seriously?
Are you thinking people over 30 don't know what pot smells like, or something?

It's reasonable to assume there was miscommunication or bad judgement regarding the use of medical marijuana. But to assume teachers are so pure they've never even been at a party in high school or college where one of the people present was smoking pot is ... well, painfully naive and silly.

5. I'm glad I grew up in the "good old days" before the sniff police mafia
took over.
