Having gotten over the Great Mustard Betrayal, Redstate now furious Obama wants to see Star Trek.

I suppose if I was the ruler of the free world, I’d want it too. I mean, if I controlled all I survey, if the nation bowed before me, if the illiterati gave an obedient chuckle at my every quip, yet paused thoughtfully at my pretensions at seriousness, if the world placed me on my rightful pedestal, I’d imagine that the producers of the hottest new movie premiering this month would be similarly overawed that I’d like to see their little film.

Certainly, were I the Übermensch-in-chief, I’d also imagine that these same film producers couldn’t possibly expect me to go to a public theater and be forced to sit with the “people” to see this flick, of course. I’d know that the film’s creators and stars would have the good sense not to expect me to have to sit among the sweaty, loud, unschooled masses, that great unwashed. These filmmakers are smart folks, after all I would know.

So, were I the king of the world, I too would give Paramount Pictures a call and demand that they set up a free, personal screening in my super cool movie house built especially for the president.

Of course, I’d have to jettison every ounce of self respect I have as well as fall to a nearly psychotic view of my own superiority to assume that the world should stop and cater to my every whim. I’d have to be completely unaware that my actions could easily be seen as one of arrogance, one that reveals a disregard for those I am supposed to be leading, one that ignores the concept of being a servant to the people.

With that in mind, what does one think when one reads Politico’s latest little report that reveals that President Barack Obama has called the Star Trek folks up asking for his own special, private screening of the franchise re-boot?

Mustard? Yeah, whatever. That's totally last week's outrage. The new Great Offense is that Obama, like each and every President since Woodrow Wilson requested a private showing of Birth of a Nation, is going to watch a movie in the White House. And what's more, he's going to watch one in the special screening room that was built specifically for Obama (er, built for Obama in 1942, when FDR decided to make better use out of a long cloakroom). Never mind that Bush watched movies in the White House, Reagan watched movies in the White House, Eisenhower--heck, Eisenhower watched over 200 different Westerns. Couldn't get enough. This is psychotic behavior, though, because...well, because Obama's doing it, and we all know Obama does not deserve to sit in the same screening room that Reagan did.

Imagine if Obama had gone to public some movie theater in DC, though. "He's disrespecting White House tradition! He made the Secret Service lock down an entire public theater at huge taxpayer cost, inconveniencing paying customers, when he has a perfectly good movie screening room in his own house!"

I really can't imagine where they think they're going with this: "Obama goes out to eat hamburgers and puts mustard on his hamburger." "Obama likes popular action movies and screened one at the White House room that was installed specifically for that purpose." Really? That's how you're gonna call him an elitist? Because he likes burgers and Hollywood blockbusters?

about every other modern president didn't also have a screening room in the WH. why do they find the most hypocritical things to cry about?

2. This goes beyond hypocrisy. It's like attacking him for having the White House Chef cook dinner.
Or like attacking him for drinking water out of the special, fancy-pants White House faucets only the fancy little President can use, in the fancy little bedroom only the President can sleep in.

I shouldn't give them ideas, though.

3. These are the same fucktards who wanted to give Bush unlimited Galactic Emperor-For-Life Power.
Oooooh! Obama! Who does he think he is? I bet he thinks he should have his own AIRPLANE, too! Yeah! Yeah!

4. Is this satire? If not, I'm still gonna laugh. Do they realize, that for security reasons...
Edited on Sun May-10-09 02:59 AM by Tarheel_Dem
the President just can't go out to the local movieplex? How many security staff would need to be in attendance in a dark movie theater? Then, of course, we'd have to hear that the theater had to be closed down so that the president could see a movie; and how much money the theater lost because of it. Blah, blah, blah.

You just can't take mustard-gate, and movie-gate seriously. You have to laugh at them.

7. They've gone into overloads of high hissyfits over that? Wait until they discover he
has raided the White House refrigerator and made poo in the White House toilets!

9. Two cheers for Scott Mustian
He may be a "RedStater", but he did point out the same thing -- that FDR began the movie-screening "tradition" -- and urged the RSers to "take the high road".

I think that Obamaphobia may be starting to wear out its welcome, even among the basest of The Base.

12. I like that subthread.
"Well, it isn't that he's watching a movie. It's that he told the media he was watching a movie. Bush would never do that!"
"Uh, here's a press release of Bush doing just that."

10. A big chunk of the wingnut population has gone completely psycho
Obama's presidency has unhinged them. Foaming outrage over watching a movie at the WH, attending the G20 summit, shaking hands with world leaders, making speeches (NOT the content of the speech-just the audacity of speaking..and how DARE he be so articulate)----the wingers believe that their rage is JUST THE SAME as the folks who got upset over Bush stealing the election, lying us into war and bungling it, ordering torture, etc. etc. etc.

These people are mentally ill.

11. They really have....dangerously so, IMO. I keep seeing...
Stickers on vehicles showing a guy pissing on Obama's name.

I'm in a red area of NC, but still...the racists are rising to the surface to be seen in all their fucked-up glory.

13. If he took his family to a public theatre there would be ganshing of teeth
of the expense to the tax-payer for the security, the disruption to the regular folk who wanted to see a movie, and the staging of a photo-op.

The theater was installed in the White House so the President could have an escape, the same reason most Americans go to the movie theater.

They are angry he is President. Nothing more nothing less.
