Christian Conservative Calls Waterboarding What It Is - TORTURE
Silence on torture troubling

Sunday, May 10, 2009

At long last, a prominent Christian conservative has called waterboarding what it is: torture. Last week, Richard Land, an official with the Southern Baptist Convention, said the practice is unethical and “violates everything we stand for.”

“There are some things you should never do to another human being, no matter how horrific the things they have done. If you do so, you demean yourself to their level,” said Land, president of the SBC’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission.

His comments, though belated, are welcome. He breaks a telling silence about torture among the most politically active leaders of the religious right, who had a tendency to endorse all decisions and embrace all practices of former President Bush. Indeed, Land had nothing to say about waterboarding when Bush was still in office, though many reports confirmed the administration’s use of the practice years ago.

1. "His comments, though belated ..."
Yeah, kudos to Richard Land, and all of the other good Christians who have stood by in silence while their fellow human beings were tortured by their allegedly God-fearing president.

But, hey, better late than never, right?

No doubt Jesus is as proud of your fine Christian ethics as I am. And surely the gratitude of the suffering and the dead knows no bounds.

3. Exactly.
These are the same people who read the Biblical account of Christ's torture and ask, "Why did NO ONE take a stand, and speak out against such inhumane treatment?"

Makes me want to retch ...

4. Yep, that's what gets me the most...
It's interesting when you're on Facebook--because you get to see the daily thoughts of people that you might
not know as close friends. However, you know them just the same. They attend school with your kids, work
with people that you know, live down the street, etc.

On my FB page--I have been so intrigued (and disgusted) to see that the most religious of my FB people--hate Obama
with a passion and are convinced that he's going to be rounding them up soon. Conversely, they toe the Bush line
on torture, war and murdering innocent people. I find their ignorance and sheer stupidity so sickening, I can
hardly stand it. I find myself saying, "Gee, I'm glad our kids are in the same class at school, but maybe I really
don't want to hear you erroneously state that this is a 'Christian Nation' and that Obama had better wise up to that
fact. Ugh.

I just don't get it. I don't get their irony or their hypocrisy. I don't get why they INSIST that this nation was
founded as "a Christian Nation" as if they're little kids screaming, "Oh yeah! Well, we were here first!"

I don't understand these people at all--and these attitudes about torture and against Obama are very bizarre.

7. Too Little Too Late...
Unless you read blogs, or Cynthia Tucker, you would have never seen/heard this story. None of the cables brought Mr. Land on to discuss this. Be assured that if this were about abortion or if Land had been a Democrat who claimed torture was jutified, he'd be on all the networks.

So, has the holy crusade finally come to an end? What's the change of mind? Too bad he's in a minority in the fundie world...there are still blood on their hands and they just can't "pray" it away...
