Poll question: Is there any job you won't do?

We often hear about the jobs "americans won't do". Heard a radio segment a few days ago, A farmer said that when he posts advertisements he's NEVER had an 'American' respond. That there are types of work that Americans consider to be totally unacceptable, that they don't even consider.

The butchering plants say that Americans don't last through the training period.

day laborers and immigrants are often hired for the 'crawl under the house and clean out the gunk' jobs. I see this often on Renovation shows.

If facing long term unemployment is there any legal job you would refuse to take? (assuming it's located within a reasonable travel distance). And if so, what types of jobs would you refuse?

I'd refuse butchering jobs.

Basically, anything that involves murdering or cleaning up behind death and gore. I have absolutely nothing against those who can and do. I am grateful for those who do - but I can't do it. If I had kids to feed and support then I might risk insanity to do it, but with it being just me I just don't think it would worth the trade off mentally.

That said, I've had a few really physically unpleasant jobs in my lifetime.

I can deal with pretty much any manual labor or service-oriented job. Still, I'm old and my back and wrists can't take much more stress after years of waiting tables and hairdressing. I have always refused to apply or take management positions because I don't want to be a professional asshole. However, after 22 years as a mother, I'm used to being the bad guy.

I already work in the Internet porn industry so, there's that.

As for jobs I positively cannot do, those would be jobs that involve wounds. It's not the blood for me. It's the wounds. I literally feel other people's wounds. I can't explain it, I just do. The only wounds I've ever been able to handle are my own and my kid's.

18. I have done some pretty dirty jobs

I have worked in the field, putting up hay, walking beans and tasseling corn as a kid. I worked in a butchering plant for 3 years doing many "dirty" jobs there.

I have dug ditches and climbed ladders to the top of steel structures. There is not much that I wouldn't do to pay the bills and feed my family.

The little troll on Lou Dobbs' show today flatly stated AGAIN (for the umpteenth time) that "there are just some jobs that Americans just WON'T do".. He claimed that "the 18 yr old at Starbucks would NOT pick peaches at ANY pay rate"..

I disagree. there are always people who WILL do menial labor, stoop labor, and repetitive type labor.

They cannot AFFORD to do it at $5 an hour though.

The dilemma we have is this..

IF we assume that fruit/vegetable pickers are at the bottom of the wage-ladder, and prices have escalated to the level of today, is it because the workers have started to get MORE in wages, or that the companies HIRING them have just taken a larger and larger cut of the money generated from the sale of that fruit?

Oil companies have presented us with the same issue. Last year when oil was $50 a barrel, and prices climbed to "near $2.00", they raked in PROFITS up 50-60% over previous year levels...and now that oil is considerably higher, they are making even MORE OBSCENE profits.

Higher prices seem to have little if ANY connection with supply and demand. The only demand, is that the CEOs DEMAND more money.

But I digress...

Are there jobs that Americans won't do??

We have had septic tanks cleaned before..by Americans..

We have had plumbers crawl into spidery-filthy crawl spaces..Americans again

We have had concrete work done in August..by Americans

We have had babysitters..Americans

In fact, I personally, have NEVER hired a non-American to do ANY job I have ever needed done.. and I have never had ANY trouble finding someone to do whatever job we needed done..

I just wish that more people would call these guys on their coded diatribes.. There are jobs to be done, and there are people who would do them..but they expect to be paid..

I've stripped tobacco, picked fruit and vegs, crawled under houses. Almost too old to do those jobs now, but if I had to I'd do them. My pride has never suffered by doing what others feel are menial jobs.

I have known people who would never stoop to doing the sorts of work I've done. Some of them were rich or from rich families, but some chose a criminal life.

There's no job in the world more disgusting than nursing. "Dirty Jobs" doesn't impress me. I've always scaled and gutted my own fish, shucked shellfish, and done other distinctly unladylike things. Pulling up cables from the dirt floor of a stadium in the days of Boone's Farm and Quaaludes (a violent and vomitous mix) was about the worst, but I didn't add to the mixture.

Many immigrants survive very low wage jobs by living in crowded group homes, where everyone splits the expenses, and bedrooms become dorms. Most Americans are not willing to take jobs where they have to live like that. Their expectations run a little higher.

The second one is on the typical commercial-type slaughter houses, the ones on a private family farm, where the animals might be better taken care of, well, someone has to kill them. It might as well be someone who would care about doing it right.

I'd also be really hesitant about something that compromised my long term health. In industries like coal, or PVC manufacturing, where it's basically trading in your youth for pain and suffering when you get older. I might think about just taking my chances with squatting or taking a deer rifle and living in the woods.

I would pick peaches if it paid a decent wage. I work two jobs right now anyway. The wife is basically busting her tail to finish her college degree, so we are living off of my income right now. That way she can go full tilt to get that degree (straight "A" student Yeehaahhh!) I have lots of hobbies that require money, so i've been doing odd mechanical jobs on the weekends, plus doing work as a mechanic for a lawn maintenance company.

In the true worst case, where my family would need whatever I could earn to survive, then I'd do just about anything legal and some things illegal.

But under your average financial collapse, like right now, then I could afford to be a little pickier. No, I would not work in a butchering plant, but I would work in a seafood plant. I have also done all kinds of scut work from time to time. The only limitation at the moment would be physical- I wouldn't be doing my family any good if I took a job that would physically kill me.

I'd like to try a day or two as a field hand- just to see if I could do it. Being a shower attendant at the Naval Academy might be fun.
