Harold Ford: I Would Have Voted To Approve Torture :

FORD: You have to remember when this was occurring. This is 2002, 2003. The country was in a different place, in a different space. And if you were to say to me, as an American, put aside my partisanship, that we have an opportunity to gain information that would prevent the destruction of an American city, to prevent killings in American cities, and we have to use certain techniques, I’m one of those Americans that would have voted a certain way, Chris. And that polling said it might have been torture, but I’m not as outraged.

Edited to add quote.

14. and one of the reasons we have laws
Is so when times get tough, we can act based on what we want to be, based on what we thought when we had time to think and calmly reflect on things. Instead of under fear or anger.

You don't go around hitting people at random. But if someone gets you really angry at someone, it might just be the fact that there is a law, that stops you from hitting a person. And when you calm down, you will be glad you followed the law, and glad it was there.

Because you would have avoided looking like terrible people, if you followed that law.

Bush/Cheney when they broke the law, because feeling they were above it, lost the protection that would have kept them from doing a stupid thing that hurt America, and was wrong.

Another reason to reestablish rule of law with prosecutions.

9. The other thing I don't understand is, what must our men and women in uniform think about this?
Edited on Mon May-11-09 06:55 PM by LakeSamish706
What happens if some of our people are captured and tortured, like happened in other past wars? They must be devastated thinking about this possibility.... I know I would if I were in the military.

11. Matthews called it "Cheney Talk"
Harold's supposedly a Democrat? He's using fear tactics to justify torture!

13. At least Tweety came down
hard on Harold without hesitation. He said "enough of this Cheney TALK"! I noticed that Ford then tried to weasel out of what he had said. Tweety held his ground and really ripped him with the follow up about we had no knowledge of any imminent nuclear attack, that was all made up by Cheney and company to justify illegally invading Iraq. (I'm paraphrasing him, but that was the jest of it)
