GOP = PARTY OF THE BIBLE / 2010 = YEAR OF THE BIBLE

111th Congress 2009-2010

H. Con. Res. 121: Encouraging the President to designate 2010 as "The National Year of the Bible"

Sponsor: Rep. Paul Broun

Mr. BROUN of Georgia (for himself, Mr. WESTMORELAND, Mr. FORBES, Mr. PENCE, Mr. GINGREY of Georgia, Mr. FRANKS of Arizona, Mr. JORDAN of Ohio, Mr. WAMP, Mr. LAMBORN, Mr. GOHMERT, Mr. MARCHANT, Mr. CARTER, Mr. AKIN, and Mr. MCGOVERN) submitted the following concurrent resolution; which was referred to the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

Encouraging the President to designate 2010 as ‘The National Year of the Bible’.

Whereas the Bible has had a profound impact in shaping America into a great Nation;

Whereas deep religious beliefs stemming from the Old and New Testament of the Bible have inspired Americans from all walks of life, especially the early settlers, whose faith, spiritual courage, and moral strength enabled them to endure intense hardships in this new land;

Whereas the Bible, used as a moral guide, has inspired compassion, love for our neighbor, and the preciousness of life and marriage, and has stimulated many benevolent, faith-based community initiatives and neighborhood partnerships that have healed and blessed our families, communities, and our entire Nation, especially in times of war, tragedy, and economic and social crisis;

Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring), That the President is encouraged--

(1) to designate an appropriate year as ‘The National Year of the Bible’; and

(2) to issue a proclamation calling upon citizens of all faiths to rediscover and apply the priceless, timeless message of the Holy Scripture which has profoundly influenced and shaped the United States and its great democratic form of Government, as well as its rich spiritual heritage, and which has unified, healed, and strengthened its people for over 200 years.

4. re: insult Bible
Shouldn't every year be the year of the Bible if you truly believe?

There are two things this Congress MUST do:

First, extend Bush's taxes cuts and second, extend this Bible resolution (so that EVERY year from now until the end of time is a Bible year).

:sarcasm:

7. There's no Jesus in the Old Testament
Without Jesus, there's no salvation (according to those who believe).

Without the Ten Commandments, there's no moral code (according to those who believe).

So you gotta have both Testaments.

9. I'm not sure there is an appropriate way to use the bible
As a secular progressive, I could make a few suggestions but I'm sure the religious regressives wouldn't be so appreciative.

10. there is no appropriate way to use religion in govt, that i agree
in personal life i can absolutely see an appropriate way one may implement what is said in bible in their life for the greater good. but one would have to chose greater good, lol. and not a self righteous self centeredness which in essence is not using the bible.

11. historical inaccuracies ...
By Ed Brayton 5/11/09

Rep. Thad McCotter is co-sponsoring House Resolution 121, which calls on President Obama to declare 2010 “The National Year of the Bible.” Unfortunately, the resolution contains historical inaccuracies that undermine its credibility. For instance, the resolution states:

Whereas shared Biblical beliefs unified the colonists and gave our early leaders the wisdom to write the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States…

There are several problems with this statement. First, the notion that the colonists had “shared Biblical beliefs” that unified them is inaccurate. In reality, 11 of the 13 colonies at the time of the writing of the Constitution had established churches that denied equal rights not only to non-Christians but to other denominations of Christianity.

Those “shared Biblical beliefs” did not prevent the Massachusetts Bay Colony, for example, from imprisoning, exiling and sometimes even putting to death Baptists, Quakers and Catholics. Even as late as 1774, with agitation for the revolutionary war in full swing, Massachusetts had at least 18 Baptists in jail for refusing to pay taxes to support a town’s Congregationalist minister.

Likewise in Virginia, the jailing of Baptist ministers as late as 1778 inspired James Madison to fight for the complete separation of church and state.

Sideshow: God, Satan, and Miss USA

By Tirdad Derakhshani

Carrie Prejean, 21, may have lost the Miss USA crown to Kristen Dalton, but God was guiding her throughout that fateful girlie show April 19 in Sin City, when she was put to the question by Perez Hilton over gay marriage. So said Carrie yesterday on James Dobson's Focus on the Family radio show (www.focusonthefamily.com). "I felt as though Satan was trying to tempt me in asking me this question," said Carrie, who spoke out against gay marriage. "And then God was in my head and in my heart, saying, 'Do not compromise this. You need to stand up for me.' And I knew . . . that it wasn't about winning. It was about being true to my convictions."
