Christian School Student Suspended For Attending Public School Prom

An Ohio Christian high school student was suspended yesterday after he escorted his girlfriend to her prom at the public high school.

Yahoo News reported Friday that 17-year-old Tyler Frost, a senior a Heritage Christian School in northwest Ohio, was told by his principal that if he attended the prom at Findlay High School with his girlfriend Rebecca Smoody he would be suspended from school, and if it was found that he was involved with sex or alcohol at the prom he would be expelled.

Frost's stepfather told the Associate Press that he doesn't expect the school's rules to apply outside the classroom.

The code of conduct at Heritage Christian School forbids dancing, rock music, hand-holding and kissing; the handbook calls rock music "part of the counterculture which seeks to implant seeds of rebellion in young people's hearts and minds."

Principal Tim England told the Associated Press, "In life, we constantly make decisions whether we are going to please self or please God. (Frost) chose one path, and the school committee chose the other."

They can make rules all they want, and Mr. Frost and his family knew what those rules were when he signed up to go to the school. At the same time, it's been my experience that kids like this either vanish so far into the church that they never come out, or they leave the church and never return. I was in the latter group.

The "rules" are because they are terrified of what's outside the church doors. Instead of allowing young people to make their own decisions, they believe they can control by fear. There is no earthly reason for their draconian rules, other than "we had our fun, we're going to make sure you don't".

4. And the church wonders why people are leaving it in droves

Even though numerous polls show that the majority of Americans "believe in God," that's a far cry from "believing in God the Official way."

Most people who "believe in God" are nowhere near a church on any given Saturday or Sunday. Some of the "believers" will make weak attempts to show up on "important" days like Easter or Christmas, but for the remainder of the year their money and their presence are elsewhere.

When I was a pastor in a Baptist church I looked at the baptismal records. It was a shell game. People switch churches all the time. At the time I was involved, the Southern Baptist Convention was really concerned about the exodus of members to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Mormons).

Organized religion isn't dead yet, but the lifeblood is draining out of it.

This kid knew what he was doing would result in punishment. If you don't like their rules, don't go to their school.

I do think that it is a stupid rule, but still it is a rule none the less. It doesn't matter that it happened outside of school. By paying tuition to that school, the student (and parents) are committing to following the rules as laid down by the school. As they are a private school, in general they can decide most of the terms and conditions of matriculation.

I went to parochial school from K-12. We had standards of conduct and were told how we were expected to behave outside of school as well. We weren't forbidden from dancing, obviously (thankfully!); but we could get in some serious trouble if, for instance, we were to run afoul of the law for some reason.
