I have been told that I need to watch some movie called
The Great Global Warming Swindle.

Anybody have the scoop on this? All I have heard is that Global Warming is being blammed on sunspots!
This person is giving me a headache...

any info on the people behind this movie would be appreciated.

3. Mention, among other things, the Carl Wunsch controversy:

Why a proven liar like the creator of this documentary would do such a thing is beyond me...

10. heh, the "its a scam for profit" talking point is such a huge lie
there is much more money in being a global warming denier right now. Just like there is lots of money to be made for evolution deniers.

9. debunked here...
http://www.medialens.org/alerts/07/0313pure_propaganda_the.php

Professor Carl Wunsch was the scientist in the film who is furious at how they twisted reality...

"I am angry because they completely misrepresented me. My views were distorted by the context in which they placed them. I was misled as to what it was going to be about. I was told about six months ago that this was to be a programme about how complicated it is to understand what is going on. If they had told me even the title of the programme, I would have absolutely refused to be on it. I am the one who has been swindled."

23. Been there, seen it
When I was a kid in the late 60's, early 70's, flurries started at Halloween, snow from Thanksgiving to Mid-March, then SPRING. Nothing wacky, just a regular progression. It just doesn't seem to match up anymore when I'm wearing shorts in December, dealing with vile hailstorms throughout the summer and hot/cold cycles throughout the spring and fall.

And, NO, it's not "Indian" summer when it happens four times with temps going back up as high as 90F. It's just Fucked-Up.

13. That "documentary" is a piece of propaganda put together by oil-industry shills
Edited on Mon Apr-02-07 11:13 PM by nam78_two
Many of the scientists appearing in it (even the ones who have otherwise respectable credentials) have taken kick-backs from the oil industry.
I have posted a little bit about that in the past. One of the guys appearing in it is even threatening to sue them for duping him into appearing in this piece of right wing garbage:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=389&topic_id=398541
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=389&topic_id=347446

Google Richard Lindzen, Fred Singer, Tim Ball etc.'s ties to the oil industry and tonnes of stuff comes up. I am planning on putting up a post about this "documentary" at some point. Long story short-propaganda garbage on par with CATO's ads about how CO2 is awesome and it only has legs because a very small percentage of scientists are actually unprincipled and unethical enough to take up something like AEI's offer for $10,000 for disputing the findings of the IPCC.

Later,
nam

16. He'll be armed with the republicon line
Which is to say some quick denial of global warming used as an excuse for unrestricted pollution.
Dissociate the blame and the heat.
the heat is there. Thermometers don't lie.
Those islands disappearing under the rising seas aren't lies either
Suggest it doesn't matter whose fault it is. It would be plain stupid to worsen the situation needlessly.
If you can't get through their ignorance layer, though, you'll need to back off before they get violent.

20. Sunspots
There being many observers who do correlate sunspots with certain weather reactions here on earth, sunspots can be believed to be a factor in weather systems on this the third planet from the sun.

However, Global Warming is happening because the level of co2 in the atmosphere is now equal to past measurements of co2 in the planet's history when the earth had much less ice. Hence the theory that ice at the poles will soon melt away. A theory that is being proved as we speak.

More co2 = hotter atmosphere = less ice

The theory then goes on to say that as the atmosphere heats up climate change will follow. And that climate changes will be forcing weather extremes, causing much turmoil on a planet that has had until now, relatively consistent, and less extreme, climate fluctuations.

STUFF AND NONSCIENCE
George Marshall @ 12:18 pm
Guest blogger, Ross Gelbspan, Pulitzer award winning journalist, argues that the two main contensions in the “Great Global Warming Swindle” have been already been challenged and settled by science.

“The Great Global Warming Swindle” may make for good television. But it is based on a premise that has been disproved by more than 2,000 scientists from more than 100 countries reporting to the United Nations in the largest and most rigorously peer-reviewed scientific collaboration in history.

It does so by cherry picking a few selective facts which, by themselves, prove nothing — except the scientific illiteracy of a culture that takes “Swindle” seriously.

The film argues, for one example, that the planet’s rising temperature plateaued around 1940 and didn’t resume its upward thrust until 1970. According to scientists in “Swindle,” that constitutes proof that human activities don’t influence the climate.

Whether by intention or ignorance on the part of the film’s producers, that conclusion betrays a profound ignorance of atmospheric dynamics. During the years leading up to and through World War II, the nations of the world accelerated their industrialization — pumping out large amounts of carbon dioxide. At the same time, they also generated huge amounts of lower-level air pollutants which exert a temporary cooling effect by reflecting sunlight back into space. Eventually, the warming overwhelms the cooling — since low-level pollutants (sulfate aerosols) stay in the air for only a matter of months — while carbon dioxide has an atmospheric residency of about 100 years.
