Iraq: -- Murder, Torture. War Crimes. "It's in the past."
Edited on Thu May-14-09 12:43 PM by Cyrano
Listening to Andrea Mitchell tell us "It's in the past," fails to wash away the despicable crimes that were committed in our name doesn't comfort me.

Murder, torture, war crimes, crimes against humanity are not "In the past."

Sorry, this post may be premature, but it's what I just heard on MSNBC. At this point, I just can't go on. My emotions (and even my brain) have overtaken any reasonable argument or sense of reason I could present here.

2. Lieberman was just on MSNBC saying the same.
Literally said, "happened YEARS ago" and "we have better things to do"

Unbelievable.

4. I know, I wonder how Lieberman would feel if somebody said that about the holocaust?
or, "that Jew" Chuck Schumer?

12. I guess the "that Jew" comment tells us where you're coming from.
Edited on Thu May-14-09 01:28 PM by Cyrano
I really don't know where you picked up that "quote," but it is one that makes me extremely uncomfortable at the very least.

On edit: I apologize for being too kind. The "That Jew" statement is a disgusting piece of bigotry. If someone else said it, you should have cited the source. In the absence of that citation, I guess I'm left with the conclusion that it is your own statement. And in no uncertain words, that makes you a bigot. (And if it was an uncredited quote from someone else, I'll apologize when you state where it came from.)

13. I put it in quotes because it was from a southern politician who
referred to Chuck Schumer as "that Jew" and then tried to explain it as saying it was similar to what they would use on the Andy Griffith show.

5. Obama
says pretty much the same crap.

Pisses me off.

I'll bet if I robbed a bank a year ago I would still be prosecuted if they caught me spending the money I stole today.

7. I thought they would wait a few more years to start saying that
Fri Oct-27-06

If the Bush Regime isn't held accountable - What will...

What will that say about us as a nation? As a people?

Will we just wait until enough years have gone by and claim how all that is part of the past and we can't change it now?

Will we wait until years go by and then issue an apology and feel good about ourselves because we did?

Without justice, can there ever really be true healing?

Apr-10-09

10. Sadly, I don't think it will take much lying and denial for most people

to tell themselves it's all better now.

Someone in Congress will proclaim, "We'll make new laws" ...and then some will cheer, "See! They're doing something about it!" - conveniently overlooking the fact that it was never - ever - about a lack of laws in place - but the lack of enforcing those laws and holding people accountable when they broke those laws.

Someone in D.C. will thunderously roar, "Never again!" and you'll hear the crowd cheer....all the while the guilty go about their lives, comfortable in the knowledge that they got away with it. And the only lesson learned benefits the future wanna-be tyrants, who know exactly what the American people will allow and turn a blind eye to...they know exactly what they can get away with...and next time - and there will be a next time - it will be worse. And why not? - with absolutely no accountability for their crimes.

As more and more time passes only those who truly desire justice will still be demanding it - and more and more voices will raise themselves against accountability because - and we've all heard these excuses before ..."That's the past", "We can't change the past", "We can't right all the wrongs of the past" - and isn't it ever so convenient to wait and wait until so much time passes that people feel ever so comfortable saying those things?....always overlooking the fact that nothing was ever done about those abuses and those crimes when they first took place.

And all the while, America will portray itself as a beacon of light, the champion of human rights, and the defender of freedom.

9. "It's in the past" is a blatant lie, no matter who says it.
Edited on Thu May-14-09 12:44 PM by Swamp Rat
Obama, Cheney, Andrea Mitchell... crimes against humanity perpetrated by the USA (and many other governments) is in the here and now, and ALL participants - aiders and abettors included - should be prosecuted. Numerous courts and tribunals over the last 60 years have already set the precedent that NO ONE is above the law when it comes to war crimes.
