The Debate Over the Guantanmo Detainees |
|
About an hour ago I turned to CSPAN just in time to hear a Democrat from Texas pretty much so beg that the Detainees at Guantanmo not be released. The person claimed that it would be dangerous to let these people go so we should just keep them at Guantanmo. The person also brought up the fact that Attorney General Holder just came back from Guantanmo and claimed the place was well run. Finally, the person posed the question what about the members of the military who have been wounded or died during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
From what I have heard many of the people at Guantanmo did not committee any crimes. So, my question would be are we supposed to just hold innocent people in jail throughout their life. My response to the question about our military personnel is that Guantanmo has nothing to do with are military people. Closing Guantanmo will neither make better or make worse what has happened to our military members. It would make no point to keep a prison open in the hopes that it would make what happened to our military personnel okay.
In my opinion we need to charge and try every person at Guantanmo who can be accused of a crime. If they cannot be charged they should be let go. I think the government can find places to send these people.

just like questioning the wars "would make" the soldiers' deaths and injueries therein a waste Once the foot soldiers have been invoked, it's harder to point out that it's been a waste since October 2001, since they're really wars of aggression. This is a fact that can't be ameliorated by anyone getting "smoked out" of Afghanistan or any peace or democracy "brought" to Iraq: those would be distractions from the facts of invasion even if they weren't blatantly false!
