I know this will be torched, but it was still a totally cool moment. I had the top three: Rachel Alexander, Mine That Bird, and Musket Man. Just had Mine That Bird catching Rachel, and he almost did. But he couldn't. She is extraordinary.

I think this was special. But what the hell: Whatever the mods do with this thread, I want to share it with you.

7. You're right, and I don't think Mine That Bird can handle that distance, either.

I was 21 when Secretariat won the Triple Crown.

I will go to my grave without ever seeing anything like him.

9. Didn't someone list him

in their ten greatest athletes of all time a few years back? Some sportswriters, I think. They got some flack at calling a horse an athlete, defended it emphatically. Someone claimed that "athletes" train to hone their skills and a horse just runs because he can and is told to. They pretty much just said "shut up, fool. Big Red was an athlete." I loved it.

13. If there was ever a horse that could be called an athlete, Secretariat was it.

He really seemed to run not just because he was bred to run or because someone stuck him in a gate and told him to run, but because he just loved to run, and he had to run like he had to breathe. And when he ran, he left the rest so far behind they looked like they were in a different race. Amazing.

8. Yep. If he takes the Belmont, he is in front for Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year.

I don't think a jockey has ever gotten it, and there is much to be seen yet this year.

But Calvin Borel is already in the mix.

12. I watched it. What a great race.

I admit, seeing the filly win made me smile. And I was so glad it was another safe race...no horses losing their lives. Especially after the one threw his jockey while still in the gate. That was a bit scary.
