3. 3% of traffic are called "addicts" and produce 60% of the traffic
Edited on Sun May-17-09 07:17 AM by TexasObserver
I suppose when someone here tells another poster to "put down the crack pipe," that may not be far from the truth.

Of course, they might mean something else when they use the word "addict."

I'm not an addict. I can quit any time I want to.

45. We should not wish to be any larger...
Of course, if we opened up the board to the right-wing dittoes, we would be much larger. But, we would lose whatever it is that makes DU special. It is not that we do not have opposing viewpoints but we disagree over facts and perceived truths, not political ideologies. We simply do not believe in the Republican philosophy. We do not waste our time discussing matters in a wasteland. It is a big enough job trying to figure out what we believe in as Democrats.

They're somwhat younger, tend to have more kids, better educated, and a higher percentage of minorities frequent their site.

Not at all what we'd think.

there's no way to verify education levels. My guess is, there are quite a few liars from Free Republic answering Quantcast's questions. From what I've seen at Free Republic, most of the posters are barely literate.

18. everyone here so far has >1000 posts.
DU is one site I visit routinely, and post more than most others. IMO it is s/w dominated by a minority of posters - but that's probably true in most cases. I would guess 90% of my FB posts are from <10% of my FB friends.

DU is good for discussion of opinion, and better than average for info. But no better than average for accuracy. It's easy to type a response without looking at the original article, and all of us are vulnerable to articles which are partially accurate, from any source.

So it would be nice if people who are less liberal actually looked at DU. And I wonder how many of them, if this data is correct, got her by a link to some other site. Is DU quoted as a third-party source on other sites?

21. DU used to have a bigger "liberal tent"
The paid/unpaid baiters/repliers and limitations of DU have driven many away as they did even in genealogy newsgroups and Bulletin Boards at the dawn of the internet.

It is like walking down a street with groups of people making conversation that you can listen to or choose to join into but there is a lot of nonsense, some misinformation and some just plain crazies. Not everyone has the time or the ability can wade through it all and ignore the chaff in order to use this site for what it is excellent for and that is pre-breaking news, alternative news, local opinions and organizing and analyzing policy with and without spin.

For example, the torture issue was debated, researched and recorded here from the beginning and the fluid truth that is being put forth by the media, the former administration and friends, and the CIA can be and is quickly countered.

Glad to have been long for the ride.

36. DU also has quite a few highly reliable posters who go the extra step
to find accurate and factual articles and commentaries, as well as a reliable source of people who step in to correct factual errors. I don't want to nor do I need to name names since most of us know who they are. There are certain posters who I always read when I come across their names because I trust them enough to get my information through them.

Which shows to go that almost in any cross section of human groups you will find a little of everything and the whole range of the IQ bell curve. Well, maybe not in the comments at Huffington Post... We don't hold a candle to the amount of blood that spurts from there!

49. Whoever wrote that explanation should be beaten with a sack of oranges.
And I thought I wrote in an obfuscatory style! The sad thing is, it's obviously supposed to be an advertisement to get more customers. They don't really ever reveal the nitty, gritty details as far as I can see, but this is as close as I got:

"At the heart of Quantcast's unique direct measurement audience service is an inference model based on a proprietary representation of digital media consumption that is called the visit graph (see figure 1). The visit graph analyzes the dynamic relationship between Internet media audiences and their interactions with a comprehensive set of digital media assets, which includes websites, blogs, video, widgets and advertising campaigns."

Direct measurement is done through:

viewing a web page, downloading an mp3, responding to an ad, launching a widget, watching a video, purchasing a product, chatting on IM, launching a game.

After that is something they call "multiple reference points":

"These data sets are sourced from multiple parties including market research companies, ISPs (broadband and dial-up) and toolbar vendors and cover in excess of 2 million individuals (1.5 million in the US)."

Probably some other stuff. So basically, they can transmit on screen activity plus having contacts with people who may or may not have direct access to your identity and further activity, to translate into numbers. The point of all of this is to either bypass the growing number of people who don't use cookies or to add to the profile that a cookie brings. Without really knowing the details it all still seems suspect.

They're watching you, feel they're eyes.
