Mary Matalin: Obama Brought on Cheney Criticism

The Washington Post today has a piece on how Republican Party members are uncomfortable with Dick Cheney’s constant criticism of President Obama.

While many of the sources — most of whom preferred to be anonymous — say Cheney’s television appearances hurt their party, Mary Matalin, a Republican strategist who once worked as Cheney’s spokeswoman, came to the former vice president’s defense.

According to Matalin, it’s Obama who deserves the blame for Cheney’s outbursts:

If Barack Obama had come in and done what he said he was going to do and look at the stuff and see what is working, then Cheney would have continued to do what he was doing — working on memoirs, finishing his house. He’s got a good life. He’s got stuff going on. He doesn’t care about being on TV. There’s no more politics there. He’s not settling any scores. He just wants people to understand.

I have not forgotten that this lady through her marriage to James Carville...has been privy to phone calls shared from the White House chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel. She is on CNN now as a contributor, and I wonder if this access is still available. It was in January of this year.

A bit later, CNN commentator Paul Begala, who is not quite the early bird that his friends are, will complete the circle with a rapid set of calls to all three. Different versions of this round-robin chatter have been taking place, with few interruptions, every workday for nearly a generation.

“I refer to it as the 17-year-long conference call,” said Emanuel, who starts calling his friends at 6 a.m. “You can tap into it anytime you want.”

So Mary Matalin was in on calls that “are about what’s happening, what the implications are of what’s happening and what’s going on"...in the words of Rahm.

Fingers crossed the calls are not going on any longer.
