The argument for torture is simple: "Evil is good when it benefits me."
That is the Right's argument in a nutshell. In saying torture was necessary to protect America all that is being said is evil is good when it benefits me. Let the religious types deal with that synopsis.

5. Yep.
It makes me wonder why they manage to win any elections at all.

6. Why do they win elections? Because a large part of this country agrees with them.

8. Well that's not necessarily true.
True acts of evil can be acts of absolute destruction where no one benefits.

4. Some of these troglodytes don't care if torture works or not
I've heard some actually admit to it. They say it's being done to our troops - and would be done regardless of whether we did it or not - so allow me the vicarious thrill of knowing the infidels are being made to suffer. When I point out that more subtle interrogation techniques are far more effective, they remain unswayed. I reduced one of them to a quivering blob who was beside himself with rage when I told him that he didn't give a fuck about national security, or else he'd want the most effective techniques used. I invited him to try inflicting some pain on me if he didn't mind some back in return, but he declined.
