My favorite thing about DU? The DEBATE
I totally support anyone who wants to start an Edwards thread and state their opinion.
Many of us disagree, but at least we have the discussion.
I've seen some interesting points- both for and against the size of the home.

No one ever has the correct opinion at all times.
There is always an opportunity to listen- to grow and learn new things.
To view things through other lenses.

I think the problem comes when we all get angry and start posting the "Shut the F up" threads- complete
with multiple pile ons.

I have always maintained that what separates us from Freepertown is our ability to disagree with each other.
There is no lockstep in our party line- and I wouldn't want there to be.

Like everyone else here, sometimes I forget how important the debate is and I say dumb things like "Shut up!" or
"Keep it to yourself". Unlike our freeper counterparts, I can admit that sometimes I am wrong.
John Edwards is a public figure. He is running for President. He did build that house. The house is BIG.
He does run with his 2 Americas platform. That house could hold about 30 people comfortably. Many of our fellow
DUers are either poor, just about poor or middle class. There are even several homeless Duers.
After reading all of the threads I am walking away with the opinion that many people are looking for a candidate who is
more like them. Less Aaron Spelling, more Ed Begley Jr.
I guess we should talk about it.

I personally don't think the size of his house affects his stance on the issues- BUT- after reading so many
of the opposing arguments on that issue, I concede that it could be a problem for many.

Keep up the debate DUers!! You guys rock.

4. It would be so boring to come here and have everyone
spouting the same thing.

We would learn nothing but how to keep saying the same thing over and over.

7. lol... I think we all know where to find the echo chamber!
It's a sad sad way to live.
That's why they are all so ANGRY at us~ we dare to form our own opinions.

6. very well said- me too. This is what makes DU and the
democratIC party far more appealing to me than anything else going-

A big tent is just that- shelter for ALL-- regardless of the package-

No one is saying Edwards isn't a Democrat- (or if they are, I'd strongly disagree with them) they are bothered by some of his choices in life- And that is human nature-

No one is 'correct'- and I don't particularly desire to be 'right'-

peace,
blu

8. Do we know how much he gives to charity every year? As long as the
smearing is going to go on...I hope it happens now, in 2007, so we can get it out of our system and talk about policies and real issues come 2008.

9. I agree 100% I hate the threads that tell others to shut up
So what if their is 20 Edwards threads???? There are no rules at DU putting a cap on the number of threads that can be started about one subject. Why on earth would someone take the time and energy to tell everyone to stop posting on a subject? Just move on to what you want to discuss, and let those who want to start another thread do what they want. There is plenty of room for everyone on here.

10. A handful of people starting multiple threads each on the same topic, without much new to say in
each one, is not cool though.

Otherwise I agree with you.

The proliferation of threads, and threads decrying the threads, has caused me to use the "hide thread" for the first time with extreme prejudice, although I'm sure many have done so with "Rove indicted", "smoking wars", "Schiavo", "Duke rape case" and other DU classics.

13. "Oh! I just discovered Fire!!"
New to them ... new to everyone.

I'm reminded of the observation that every infant thinks THEY discovered the world. Then they grow up.

It also amuses me to observe that we all think we're the center of the universe.
It amuses me especially because it's relativistically quite true! (It's hard to explain that to most, though.)

16. Yep. So am I.
:dunce:

The 'center' is everywhere, actually. It's a relativity thing.
Consider: The 'distance' in light years to the 'edge' of the universe is the same, no matter from where it's measured or in which direction. (Think "big bang" and age/speed of light.)

11. But anyone with an opposing opinion is "arrogant" ... even if quoting a Nobel Prize winner.
Edited on Sat Jan-27-07 01:44 PM by TahitiNut
Some seem to think a disagreement is an attack on themselves, their children, their sperm, and their ovaries. So, they reciprocate.

According to some, any expression of an opinion (except THEIRS) is the same as imposing a dictatorial fiat on others. So, they reciprocate.

Some seem to think that an opposing opinion, no matter how candidly reasoned, is sexist. So, they reciprocate.

Some seem to think that an opposing opinion, no matter how candidly reasoned, is racist. So, they reciprocate.

Some seem to think that any DUer keeping an open mind regarding presidential candidates is not being a compliant part of the Borg. So, deprived of the basis to call them an "{asshole}-supporter," they just call them an asshole.

Even more remarkable, there are many here on DU who claim to possess the ability to divine the motives and read the hearts and minds of other DUers ... over the pipes of the Internets, no less. They need not even be asked and they'll generously tell you what you think ... and why.

"Debate"? Where? :eyes:

I've seen better debate on playgrounds with kids saying "you did it first!"
Some seem to think 'Argument Clinic' is an example of excellence in reasoning rather than parody.

12. I think that is a rather small sampling
of people who attack. They do it loud and often so you think there is alot of anger here.
I notice that it is always the same 15 people who go off on every subject. After you have
gone through their anger pile, you normally hit the debate.
