<<Community leaders said determining the present population of the community is difficult. Their best estimate is that population is down from about 3,000 before May 12, 2008 – to about 1,800 today.

But the Rev. Stephen Brackett, of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, said many more than the 389 arrested have left the community.

"Postville is a wonderful opportunity for any elected official to see why immigration raids are not an effective means for enforcing immigration laws," he said at Tuesday's press conference.

"And look at the cost to the town, to human beings ... it just doesn't sound like the America I'm used to growing up in.">>
