Credit Card Bill Allows Guns in National Parks

Tucked away in the “Miscellaneous Provision” section at the end of the credit card reform bill – the Credit Cardholders’ Bill of Rights Act of 2009 – just passed by the U.S. Congress, is a provision allowing people to carry loaded firearms in national parks and wildlife refuges.

Introduced as an amendment to the credit card reform bill by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Oklahoma), the provision allows owners of licensed firearms to bring them into national parks and wildlife refuges as long as they are allowed to do so by state law. snip

“The Federal laws should make it clear that the second amendment rights of an individual at a unit of the National Park System or the National Wildlife Refuge System should not be infringed,” states Sen. Coburn’s amendment.

The Credit Cardholders’ Bill of Rights Act of 2009, along with Sen. Coburn’s “Protecting Americans from Violent Crimes” amendment, pass by votes of 279-147 in the House and 90-5 in the Senate.

i always thought it was dumb that someone like myself who carries 24/7, every where i go, could get in the poop for carrying in the national park, was the dumbest rule ive ever seen. Especially when you consider the bad guys carry in the national parks all the time anyway.

“The U.S. House vote today to allow loaded firearms to be carried both concealed and openly in most of our national parks, in urban areas as well as rural areas, moves us one step closer to reversing the safety-oriented gun responsibility rule adopted early in the Reagan Administration.

“This vote ignored the concerns of law enforcement officials responsible for safety in our national parks as well as the vast majority of park users who submitted comments in opposition to changing these rules.

“By attaching this language to an unrelated bill designed to protect credit card users, those pushing more guns in more places have insulated themselves from any possible chance of a veto by President Obama.

“When he signs this bill, however, we call on President Obama to re-affirm his long-standing concern about more guns being carried in more places, and promise the American people that he will be taking steps in the near future to help reduce the gun violence in this country that unnecessarily touches so many each year.

“The Supreme Court has said that we have gun rights, but has also said those rights are ‘not unlimited.’ Let's now start talking about gun responsibilities as well as gun rights.”
