Television ads to become increasingly aggressive
http://adage.com/article?article_id=136841

Oh good.

Let's see how they play out, but I suspect it'll be childish, lacking any depth or reasoning... wait, that's our "culture" to begin with: vapid and dissuading people from thinking. My bad! At least the "Before you throw the gauntlet" section, as if we all do marketing for a living :eyes:, has a grain of common sense... which will be passe by 2010 anyway...

No, this is not a lounge thread. If it were, you'd see a massive tonal shift in post.

3. Oh, so no standards? Just do what one wants without thought of repercussion?
use your remote control switch on me, then, because all you are is someone lazy who tells everyone to do everything else. You're "remote control" comment is as participatory as a dust mite.

14. "TV ads to become increasingly aggressive"
As, it would appear are some of the responses here, unless, of course, you forgot the "sarcasm" smilie; otherwise, I don't understand this response at all. If I'm misinterpreting, please forgive.

6. Indeed. There are few things that bug me more than commercials doubling the volume on me.

21. There is a cap on volume levels for broadcasters
The thing is, commercials are recorded at the highest level allowed, while programs record/broadcast at varying levels.

This explains it:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17229281/

Fortunately, companies like Dolby are working on speakers that would auto-adjust volume levels:

Of course, the article cited in the OP is about advertisers attacking their rivals. :)

11. I love the Remote Control but,
I love the MUTE button more. You are correct, being able to lock out certain channels is a blessing.

10. I don't mind the "attack ads" so much...it's the ones
that assault me with ear-splitting sound that's at least 50 decibels above whatever program I was watching before the switch to commercial.

Sometimes it's nearly impossible to watch a program without literally having the remote in my hand the whole time so I can "mute" and "unmute" when the situation requires. Makes watching TV extremely unpleasant. Which is a shame, really, because sometimes it happens during some pretty good educational shows I'd like to see.

Bastards!!!!!

I hear it's to get people's attention.

OK....they get mine, alright. I take note of which product it is and then buy the competing brand if at all possible.

17. I always hated "Brand X" commercials.
When I was a kid, all the commercials compared the advertised product to Brand X. I thought it was annoying then and I would think it annoying now. If you are going to claim to be better, then have the integrity to say what you are better than. Of course, many of these ads were promoting products where the brand makes no difference whatsoever. Hellman's mayo really is better than Kraft, but white flour is white flour. Vigo is better than Mahatma and both are better than house brand. Whole wheat or organic pasta is a waste of money, unless you like pasty pasta. Niagra spray starch really is better than noname. And as much as I hate to admit it, because I am too cheap to pay for it, Tide really is the best laundry detergent; but bleach is bleach.

22. Do they really think anyone cares if they say their product tastes better in a test?
Ultimately taste is a very personal thing; we all eat what we like. I don't see how anyone is going to go with one brand of food or another because "Ours beat Brand X in a taste test." Who the f cares??
