From my Thesaurus:
"Fear" - an emotion experienced in anticipation of some specific pain or danger (usually accompanied by a desire to flee or fight)
======================
For eight years, our leaders and our country did everything out of fear. They ignored our Constitution. They invaded a sovereign nation. They tortured. They lied. They renditioned prisoners to other countries to be tortured. They spied on American citizens. And much more.
On Meet the Press this morning, Newt Gingrich admitted to the fear. He thought it was appropriate under the circumstances of what happened on 9/11. He said, "The lesson is fear. Fear is probably appropriate." And they still believe it is "appropriate" after all this time has passed. And that is what is so disturbing.
Gingrich said that the country is "less safe" now because of all the "past wounds" that people want examined and the call for truth commissions. In his fear, he presents a false choice that we can either fight the terrorists or we can investigate whether members of the Bush Administration broke the laws of our land? Why can we not do both??
Dick Durbin's response seemed to get under Newt's skin a little when he said for someone to suggest that President Obama is not working to keep America safe was one of the most ""irresponsible things he's ever heard..."
But "fear" has been the major component of our foreign policy for the last eight years. And we are now paying a terrible price. And those that were the most struck by the fear now do not want their decisions examined. They want the rest of us to continue to be fearful, like them.
We cannot afford to follow that emotion. We must change course. Our President is trying very hard but this fear amongst our people has taken root and has grown over the last few years. It will be hard to displace.
