I just heard the most ridiculously stupid thing on a story re: housing Gitmo detainees in Montana
prison.

It was all about how this Montana town with a new, but empty, maximum security prison is willing to take the Gitmo prisoners.

At the end of the piece (on ABC News) they ask a couple of local residents on the street what they think about it.

One woman interviewed said, "Well, it would certainly change a lot of things here. We'd have to start locking the doors on our pickups and cars."

:eyes:

How does someone actually survive into adulthood being this completely and totally moronic?

2. If "completely and totally moronic" is a key factor, then D.C. is the best qualified site. n/t

5. I'd have to tell her about my friend whose father worked for the federal prison here
When we were teenagers. Some of the more senior personnel at the prison, her father among them, had housing just outside the gates of the prison. One time I asked her if if she ever worried about the prisoners getting loose. She told me her family felt safer there than she did in some parts of the town. After all, there were guards that watched not only the inside of the prison but the area outside where her house was.

That town would probably be the same - safer than it is now. Not all the positions needed could be filled with locals, so more people would be brought in to work at the prison. And everyone would be on alert for strangers. I'd worry more about the safety of any translators brought in to communicate with the prisoners - they might be mistaken by the locals as being escapees.

7. How far can a terrorist get in a small town in Montana?
Edited on Sun May-24-09 06:03 PM by AllentownJake
Its surrounded by wilderness and I'm guessing 90% of the towns people are significantly armed. Just for the sake of argument one got out?

8. They should go to Canon City and ask them how they feel about SuperMax
From the dozens of times that I've been there I'd say that the citizens aren't too worried about all of the terrorists (foreign and domestic) imprisoned 15 miles away.

9. My partner's from Florence, CO.
Right next to Supermax, Minimax, Maxipad, etc. (there's quite a few prisons there). Most people have a relative working there. So they all know how utterly impossible it would be to escape. They sleep well at night.
