Morley Safer Doesn’t Trust Citizen Journalism
Filed under: Free Press, General, Wankery — Mark @ 11:53 am

Veteran newsman and 60 Minutes correspondent, Morley Safer, just won the Fred Friendly First Amendment Award from Quinnipiac University’s School of Communications. His long and distinguished career certainly justifies receiving this honor. It’s too bad he had to spoil the ceremony with the crotchety old man impression that he must have picked up from Andy Rooney.

In an attempt to address his concern for the withering state of newspapers, Safer warned that the medium’s decline “threatens all of journalism and, by extension, our precarious right to know.” He stated his belief that newspapers provide the source material for stories presented in other mediums. There is a case to be made for these assertions, but he went too far when he attacked new media, characterizing it as crammed with nuts:

The blogosphere is no alternative, crammed as it is with the ravings and manipulations of every nut with a keyboard. Good journalism is structured and structure means responsibility,” he said. He added later, “…I would trust citizen journalism as much as I would trust citizen surgery.

If Safer is really concerned with responsibility, he ought not to lash out indiscriminately at online journalism. If he wants to cast a net around “every nut with a keyboard,” and label them all journalists, then I should be able to do the same with his medium and every nut with a microphone.

Surely there are manipulative ravers on the Internet, but they could hardly be called journalists. The same is true with television and newspapers. Josh Marshall (a reporter of proven reliability) and Michelle Malkin (a purveyor of bias and propaganda), are two completely different species. Credible and principled Internet journalists would cringe at the thought of being associated with likes of Matt Drudge. Would Safer fare any better by being lumped together with Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck? Does Safer think that Ann Coulter brings honor to the newspapers who carry her column? Does he think that the National Enquirer or the New York Post are structured and responsible? If Safer wants to draw parallels between online reporters with their old media equivalents, he should not be making apples to idiots comparisons.

It would also be helpful if Safer refrained from disparaging the public at large. Safer’s analogy to “citizen surgery” carries an insulting implication that “citizen” equates to “unqualified.” Many citizens are quite capable of producing good journalism. And, perhaps to Safer’s surprise, some journalists are, in fact, good citizens. The two designations are not mutually exclusive. A better analogy might compare a modern surgeon with an old-school sawbones who refused to use an MRI or other advanced technologies. I expect that most people would prefer the modern surgeon. And as it turns out, most people prefer new media, as demonstrated in this poll:

* 67% believe traditional journalism is out of touch with what Americans want from their news.
* 32% said Internet sites are their most trusted source for news and information, followed by newspapers (22%), television (21%) and radio (15%).
* 75% believe the Internet has had a positive impact on the overall quality of journalism.
* 69% believe media companies are becoming too large and powerful to allow for competition.

There is a notable irony in that Safer would level these criticisms while accepting an award honoring the First Amendment. A true advocate for a free press would welcome more public participation, not less. After all, what could be more representative of free expression, and a free press, then citizen journalism?

Suh-weet! And there's nothing wrong with "structured" and "responsible" journalism. The problem with corporate monopoly journalism is that it's structured by political and financial consideration--and responsible only to the bottom line.

3. "Journalists" don't "trust" citizen journalists because
Edited on Sun May-24-09 06:17 PM by SoCalDem
citizen journalists are very much like children:

They(we) ask the HARD questions

When we get a canned gobbledygook answer, we do not back down, we ask the hard question again and again, until they either flat-out refuse to answer or they DO answer it

We do not ask them what their favorite color is or whether they prefer hotdogs or hamburgers

We don't CARE what condiments they put on their hamnburgers

WE don't line up to watch them cut brush or sink a 3-pointer

We WANT TO KNOW about the REAL stuff:

single-payer...why not?

DADT....why not cancel it?

why no "bailouts" to the home BUYERS, and only to the greedy bankers, who end up getting paid 4 times for the same toxic asset..(paid when they sold their own trash-loans, paid again when they bought other trash loans at a bargain, paid again as the struggling homebuyers make payments, and finally from tax-dollar bailouts, and the homebuyers are STILL on the hook for the inflated mortgage amount)

why no investigation of laws broken by BushII & Co.?
etc, etc, etc

The "professional journalists" are too aware of their 6-figure (and up) paychecks from the same corporate masters who "own" the politicians, and are too eager to be inclued in all the fun things happening in DC, so they dare not ask the hard question..

6. Morley, Alan Abel.
Your brand of responsible journalism allowed him to pull stunt after stunt. He's always been one of my heroes, a man who proved that overstuffed, self righteous journalists didn't check their facts any more than most casual cranks did.

If you guys don't know who he is, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Abel

I know pompous idiots of the press sure don't want to admit it.

At the 2000 Republican National Convention in Philadelphia, Abel introduced a campaign to ban all breastfeeding because "it is an incestuous relationship between mother and baby that manifests an oral addiction leading youngsters to smoke, drink and even becoming a homosexual." After two hundred interviews over two years, Abel confessed the hoax in U.S. News & World Report.

12. Then WHO does he trust? Bill O'Reilly? Sean Hannity? Rush Limbaugh?
There's a VACUUM in conventional media right now. And I sure don't see it being filled with the current system.

Does he really expect some 21st-century version of Ben Bradlee to rush in with the next version of Bernstein and Woodward? Is he THAT delusional?

Conventional investigative journalism is DEAD and the closest thing we have to that fine old tradition is BLOGGERS and CITIZEN JOURNALISTS.

Sure, Morley, we'd LOVE to have structured responsibility, but that's not in the cards, is it?

In the meantime, I'll rely on my OWN sources for journalistic truth, thank you very much.

13. Journalism isn't in the same league as surgery. It requires a good mind,
curiosity, an ability to research & delve through mountains of facts, a command of one's language, & the means to get one's work published.

Stop reading the non-factual rantings of the right-wing nuts, Shafer, & take a look at Josh Marshall & firedoglake. They'll have you eating your words.

16. he's right. too much of what comes out on the internet on the left and right is biased
and contains incorrect information. But then again what Shafer should be decrying is the decay of real journalists who actually report and question those in power rather than just report what the corporations that own them want.

Tom Paine is in my consciousness since elementary school. What happened? Do kids not study him now?

Keep in mind my fifth grade teacher preached against Darwin in Texas. Still, we knew "Common Sense." (all the way through school)

Sign of the times if that is out of the history books.

Do kids learn about Paine now? Only six people attended his funeral. But I learned of Paine in elementary school and later in history classes. This in Texas in the sixties. Has he been dropped off the map?

27. And Of Course, When It Comes to Matters Of *Quality,* the Public Is ALWAYS Right
Gannet newspapers now write up 50-70% of their news stories as narratives that read more like campfire tales.

Their researchers and consultants all come up with polls showing that most people think this type of news writing makes a story more credible than the traditional pyramid, and easier to retain in their memory.

No one is out there giving the public what it wants more than Gannet, and yet, my Gannet friends are forced to take unpaid furloughs to keep their jobs.

30. I remember as a kid that journalists used to report the NEWS only.
When I was a kid, I remember eating dinner in front of the TV watching real news being reported and being fascinated by it.

Today: Nothing but a bunch of noise, meant to muddy what is really going on, and a bunch of bullshit that was better off left to the tabloids and has nothing to do with "news."

I worked for ABC in 2003-2004, when the war in Iraq was still young. All I can tell you is I had to go to the blogosphere to find news that wasn't drool-inducing, flag waving, jingoistic propaganda. If the the U.S. media had any of the kind of objectivity and integrity you speak of, then maybe the blogosphere would be the kind of problem you speak of. Since it doesn't, I will continue to look elsewhere for the truth.
