SHOCKING!!!!.....Racism colors Freeper response to Sotomayor
Edited on Tue May-26-09 09:43 AM by marmar
from the FreakRepublic:

So the Dems go shopping for a new judge, the list goes:

Far left - check
Female - check
Latino or black - check

Both sides do this crap. We would be so much better off if there was only one item on the list:

Qualified - ?

I won’t live long enough to see the day when qualification matters more than group membership.

“Sotomayer’s selection was, according to a Politico report, the one most opposed by Republicans.”

This is all going according to the plan I predicted:

1. Obama picks nominee with obvious flaw.
2. Republicans burn all their energy/political-captial defeanting the first nominee.
3. Obama picks 2nd nominee (who is the one he wanted all along.)
4. 2nd nominee get confirmed, because Republican/public burned out after fight over 1st nominee.

Actually she was first put on the federal bench by George H W Bush and promoted to Appeals Court Judge by Clinton. When she was appointed by CLinton she won over 6 Republicans Cochran (Miss), Collins (Mn), Hatch (Utah), Lugar (Ind), Snowe (Mn) and Specter (Pa) all of whom voted for her appointment. She will be confirmed easily.

When I was a kid every African American household had two photos on the wall- Martin Luther King Jr. and JFK. Obama’s face is about to be on the wall of every Spanish speaking household in the US.

If Obama is able to turn the economy around, or even push it in the direction of recovery, with the demographics he is pasting together, the Dems are looking at a very long stretch of un interrupted power.

I think that could fall under qualified. She is a judge, and does have a law degree. But then again, so does Obama, and I wouldn’t retain him for any sort of legal action.

Stictly speaking, she is qualified, but is she the most qualified?

No.

6. An almost perfect plan except Sotomayer was very high on Obama's list of nominees....
whereas Miers came way out of left field and totally unexpected. It was almost like Bush wanted to appoint a woman just to satify the concept of "a woman replacing Sandra Day O'Conners" but they really didn't want another woman on the bench.

Sotomayer is very much wanted on the bench by Obama and unlike Miers, Sotomayer is very much qualified to be there.

21. Not a bad plan, actually.
If I were Obama, I would have started by nominating a hard left-wing raving lunatic, force Congress to expend their energy screaming bloody murder, then "reluctantly" withdraw that nomination, and bring in Sotomayor, framed as the "compromise nominee". At that point, the Rethugs will be under heavy pressure to relent.

30. No, because Thomas was a mediocre student in law school
who was placed on the court NOT because of his judicial prowess but because of his fealty to the Republican party - THAT makes him a token. They wanted a loyal black conservative Republican - it WAS an affirmative action appointment. OTOH, Thurgood Marshall was one of the best, most qualified men to ever serve on the court. It is not a matter of Thomas being black, but of him being an intellectually challenged Republican aparatchik that makes him a true liability to the court.

Sotomayor is not, because she has a stellar scholastic record - Cum Laude from Princeton, editor of Yale Law Review - and with that background she would be easily eligible even if she were not a Puerto Rican female. Her qualifications would look good on a pasty old white man. A pasty old white man with Thomas' educational and legal background would have never been considered.

By that same token (if I may use that word) Scalia is also no token - his politics and opinions may be abysmal, but he does have the educational and judicial background commensurate with appointment to the Supremes - that he is also an Italian-American Catholic was a boon, but not the determining factor - just as Sotomayor being a Puerto Rican Catholic woman is a boon, but not the determining factor.

Edited on Tue May-26-09 12:35 PM by RaleighNCDUer
Do you even know what 'token' refers to?

In the 60s, companies that were reluctant to integrate their workforce would prominently place one or two minority employees up front to show that they were integrating, that they were not racist; nevermind that that employee represented .5% of the company's workforce; nevermind if that employee had no real responsibilities. And if that employee should ever get uppity, ask for real responsibilities or, heaven forbid, a raise or promotion, he could be easily replaced with another compliant, subservient n***** to sit by the door.

Is Steele a token? Look at what happened to him when he, the titular head of the republican party, got in a tiff with Rush Limbaugh - he was forced to publicly apologize by the party he supposedly leads to a racist blowhard - apologize or resign. Replace the n***** who sits by the door.

Was Powell a token? A very popular, moderate Republican who at one time looked to have a good shot at being the first black president of the US - but he clashed with the rightist warmongers and got replaced.

A token might or might not be qualified - qualifications are not a factor. It's all about making the company look good to the public. The one consistent thread with tokens is that they have no real power - they do NOT make the decisions and are quickly and easily replaced if they overstep their bounds.

Was Condi a token? We may never know, because she ALWAYS toed the party line. she never gave them a reason to replace her.

So, what would YOU call a black 'leader' of a party that is 97% white?

41. Oh, come on.
Remember the Powell Doctrine? Whoops! Where'd it go?
Remember the United Nations speech?

Powell rolled over for the the hardliners, then, upon finding out about what the hardliners did with Gitmo and Abu Graib he put his foot down - This far, and no farther! - and went no farther. For all his faults, he couldn't countenance what the administration's abandoning of principles in regards to prisoners and torture was doing to HIS military, and so THEY REPLACED HIM - they replaced him with Condi, who was just fine with torture as US policy.

You REALLY think this guy with HUGE political ambitions voluntarily resigned, thus ending his political career? Just because you heard it on Fox, it doesn't mean it's true. He was forced out.

He NEVER had any real influence in Bush's WH. You could see that by the way they treated him. They were fine with him as long as he went along with them, and he got the boot when he opposed them.

BTW, in regards to your last comment - when did Condi EVER oppose administration policy?

45. yes, Powell lost to the hawks on Iraq
so did George Tenet. Does that make Tenet a token Greek?

Regarding Powell's resignation, he served a typical 4-year term, and resigned after much earlier announcing he would, while Rumsfeld was humiliatingly canned right after the 2004 election. And yet you say that Powell is the one that was pushed out? What does a black man have to do to prove he's not a token?

And among the disagreements where Rice prevailed was our negotiations with Iran. You do notice that we didn't go to war with Iran? Do you think Cheney didn't want to? What does a black woman have to do to prove she's not a token?

46. The reason we didn't go to war with Iran was because there was no way
we could do it without going nuclear.

With 150,000 people on the ground in Iraq, we'd have had no chance dealing with a well-organized, well armed 500,000 Iranians coming across the border. Even the morons in Bushco could see that.

As for being a token, as I said, it has NOTHING to do with qualifications - only with how they use the person. Powell knew he was being used by them within 6 months of taking office, when he saw the administration abandon the Powell Doctrine in favor of some half-baked theories of Rumsfeld's. How many diplomatic initiatives were acted on in the last 3 of his 4 years? He was pushed aside, marginalized and, seeing that, 'resigned' after one term - having been as useful as tits on a boar for three quarters of that term.

Also, maybe I wasn't clear on that above - being the 'token' is NOT necessarily a reflection on the person. It is a reflection on the organization USING that person, in this case the Republican administration under Bush. And THAT is what makes the person a token - anybody who fit the parameters they want can be interchanged with that person, i.e., failed national security advisor Condeleeza Rice interchanged with Powell as the supposedly senior foreign policy advisor to the president. The REAL foreign policy maker was residing in the Naval Observatory - both Powell and Rice were window dressing.

47. maybe Rice made that argument to Bush
which would be good, because it looked Cheney and some other white men really wanted to go to war with Iran, and they didn't want the black woman to negotiate with them, but the black woman did go and negotiate and we didn't go to war.

But maybe in your determination not to give the black woman any credit you will say the negotiatations were all the white man's idea.

48. What negotiating? Who negotiated?
She did NOT stop a war because no one seriously considered a war. Iran wasn't about to start anything. If they'd wanted to, we couldn't have done anything about it short of nuking them, and they didn't want to be nuked - therefore, they weren't going to start anything. We weren't going to start anything because if we did we'd trigger a half-million man invasion of Iraq, which would have cost us tens of thousands of soldiers. We didn't want a war on yet a third front, therefore we were not going to start anything.

And don't your fucking DARE to imply that I'm a racist simply because I acknowledge that Condi Rice is an incompetent hack. As a diplomat, she make a damn good piano player.

The only reason she was there was she was part of the oil company cabal - how many 'experts on the Soviet Union' have oil tankers named after them? Her national security credentials were her knowledge of a political system that evaporated ten years before her appointment, and NOTHING since. Then she went straight from her failures as national security advisor (who failed on 9/11, failed on WMD intel, failed on Bin Laden's whereabouts in Afghanistan) to being the errand girl for Bushco as the Secretary of State - reducing that position to a previously unheard of level of insignificance.

At least Powell TRIED to not let his office be marginalized.

33. Calling someone an Affirmative Action candidate is a well known slur.
It speaks directly to their supposed "incompetence" overlooked in service of a quota.

Calling someone a "token" is a little different because it doesn't speak to their qualifications at all.

36. have you ever said anything about it here?
Have you ever seen anyone object to the "rascim" of calling Thomas an affirmative action judge? I haven't. I've seen total acceptance of it here, and total condemnation of it at FR.

I wonder, if there's racism here isn't it better to examine that racism than accuse the Freepers of it? After all, isn't there more we can do about our own racism?

By the way, let me say again I don't think it's racism either place. Careless, unfair maybe, but not racism.

38. Trying to think back. I don't know if I have objected to that use of AA
with respect to Thomas, Enrique, although I generally do pipe up about those issues. I have defended AA itself.
