Sun-Times exclusive: Burris promised Blago campaign a check by mid-December

In a November conversation caught on an FBI wiretap, Roland Burris promised Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s brother that he’d write the governor a campaign check by mid-December, Burris’ lawyer said today.

That was about a month before Rod Blagojevich appointed Burris to the U.S. Senate.

But lawyer Timothy Wright told the Chicago Sun-Times today that his client never sent the check because he believed it wasn’t a good idea given Burris’ interest in the U.S. Senate seat appointment. Wright said Burris’ decision not to send the check had nothing to do with Blagojevich’s Dec. 9 arrest.

1. That's an open and shut case of perjury, then.

2. This has the making of an ugly, divided primary

Burris has the support of the black ministers and politicians in Chicago and Cook County.

The regular Democrat organization usually does what Daley asks them to do.

Next year the Burris schism and the Todd Stroger split with the Daly organization is going to tear the vote in pretty much two equal parts.

We could actually wind up with a "R" Senator to replace Obama and an "R" heading up the Cook County Board.

One of the problems we have is that Blago won't go away and be quiet either.

He and his wife are all over the radio and TV again promoting their book and her appearance on I'm a celebrity, get me out of here.

Every time he shows up it reminds people of the corruption in Springfield.

9. Worse than that - the split is along racial lines

Nobody seems to be saying it out loud but the split with both Burris and Stroger is straight along racial lines.

If the primary is as racially divided as it appears it is, it could take years to reform an alliance and in the meantime the Repubs can recover and will actually gain ground state wide.

George Ryan is fading into the background and is just another Federal prisoner. Next year, in the middle of the election Blago is going to center stage for his trial. Win or lose it will make the Illinois D party, Mike Madigan, Cullerton and the rest of the Springfield crew front page news nationwide when we need it the least.

I thought that wouldn't come up as an issue until Daley retired/died.

3. they could have waited until blago was impeached .

harry and the boys could have waited a month so that pat quinn could have made the pick for senator. they must not have trusted quinn to make a choose they would be acceptable to them.

do not count on a democrat taking the senate seat in 2010. this bullshit with burris almost guarantees a republican winning in 2010.

i`m throughly disgusted with the democratic party in illinois. it`s time to clean up the sewer that is the state party

he received 0 support from the democratic and republican voters and the entire legislature.

i thought we could recover from this disaster by next year but now....

worse thing about this crap is that we have several very good democrats that would be excellent senators. ever since the ryan scandal the republican party has been waiting for their chance to pounce on the democrats and now they have their chance...

with a Dem asap. Yes, in hindsight, maybe they should have waited. I wonder if they'll have any recourse now, like tossing his ass and having Quinn appoint someone.

6. Burriss will not win a primary. It's all moot now.

He's just a blip on the radar. Politics is a dirty business.

He may need a bigger headstone now, since he's going to be dragged into the Blago court case
