Does anyone out there take issues with Sotomayor's Pro Life creds?

Although she never argued an abortion case (very few have, btw) she has been pretty much on the Anti-Abortion side for a while.

Granted, she's no Scalia. But Bush gave us 2 Rabid RWingers, do we really want to challenge that with a moderate?

1. I'm beyond caring about Roe v Wade anymore. If this country wants

an anti-choice USSC and overturns it, it won't affect me. People can have what they want, and if they want dead women, who am I to stop them? Because that's what they will get. Just not me (I'm 52).

I've given that fight the best years of my life. Young people have to take up the banner.

Was it about her decision regarding "Center for Reproductive Law and Policy v. Bush"? That was the one about federal funds going to abortion providers out of country.

Or was it the one (don't recall the case name) where she upheld the rights of anti-choice protesters in regards to excessive force used by the police against them?

Or is there something else I'm not aware of?

While the two cases below are tangentially related, neither would necessarily leave me concluding she is anti-choice...


This assertion is an important one.... I really hope someone can find a basis for making it or disprove it. I am very uncomfortable with some of the conclusions being drawn with minimal evidence... :shrug:

3. I'm not passionate about the abortion issue like many, but I think this woman will turn conservative

over time. I really don't like the pick at all. Also for someone to be as smart as her academic record suggest, she really doesn't explain things in an intelligent way. I know Obama could've found someone better. I hope it works out, but I can see her being the Dem's Souter.

Mainly because a good number 15-30%? of Latinos consider themselves Catholic. Hopefully her personal religious beliefs wont affect the interpretation of the laws for everyone.

and some examples.

I've been reading all afternoon about her and haven't found a single reference to her being "pro life."

And if she hasn't argued an abortion case, then how pray-tell, do you have any knowledge of her being "pretty much on the anti-abortion side???"

Please share. If you've got nothing, as I suspect is the case, you should delete this.

From Wikipedia:

In Center for Reproductive Law and Policy v. Bush,<44> Sotomayor upheld the Bush administration's implementation of the Mexico City Policy which requires foreign organizations receiving U.S. funds to "neither perform nor actively promote abortion as a method of family planning in other nations". Sotomayor held that the policy did not constitute a violation of equal protection, as the government "is free to favor the anti-abortion position over the pro-choice position, and can do so with public funds".<45>

However, if you actually look at that ruling, that statement is make in the context of 'The Supreme Court has held'. So she was quoting SC precedent.

Also, since she declares herself as Roman Catholic, that raises a bit of a concern for me about how she might rule.

I was offering it as to the single reference that people seem to be picking up on. I don't think her views are clear at all. I just wanted to add some context to the conversation so people know where this is coming from.

And I'm just as sure there are as many Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim and Atheist pro-lifers.

Remember John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, and Geraldine Ferraro are ALL Roman Catholics and ardently pro-choice.

I can't find that article anymore, and withhold any judgment until I can.
