Would you let a robot drive your car?

Would you trust a robot to drive a car you are riding in?

I am a great believer in AI and the ilk and I think in the next 20 to 30 years there will be robots that can drive cars. Not robots like in Lost in Space, but a form of artificial intelligence attached to sensors and the ability to steer, accelerate and brake.

The main problem is trust. We already have robots doing small parts of driving: antilock brakes, parking assist, launch control in race cars. I think on average us humans do a poor job of driving and we should leave it up to the robots.

5. I've already riden in driverless vehicles. No biggie.

A few years ago I had a client with several of them roving around the factory grounds. They weren't the brightest AI's out there...they followed lines painted on the factory floor and surrounding equipment yards, and used a simple thermal/doppler system to detect people and obstacles in their way. They were used heavily to move goods and people around the factory. They were completely computer controlled, with no human intervention in any part of their operation (though there was a really big EMERGENCY STOP button that passengers could hit...just in case!)

It was a novelty at first, but none of the people in the factory thought twice about it. Neither did I after a few days.

Since they are on tracks nobody worries, I guess. I usually too sleepy to care.

On edit: In fact once the technology was proven I'd make it illegal for a person to drive a car. If they wanted the thrill of driving they could do it on a race track.

10. AIs have been landing airplanes for a while

Among Predator pilots, the computers land the plane much better than the human.

I would trust a robot a lot more than a pilot flying. Not now but soon.

Don't think I would trust some Artificial INteligence program. But a good software program such as already used in aircraft flight controls etc. wouldn't bother me.
