Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins on Judge Sotomayor

(If we can hold the Democratic caucus together and get Maine's two moderate female senators to support Judge Sotomayor, then there is more than enough to avoid a filibuster. I expect other republicans will also support her in the end)

Indisputably, this is an historic selection, as Sonia Sotomayor is just the third woman to be nominated to The Court and the first Hispanic American. I commend President Obama for nominating a well-qualified woman, as I urged him to do during a one-on-one meeting on a variety of issues in the Oval Office earlier this month.

6. That cartoon doesn't hold up under critical analysis

Technically the apple and trees labeles should be switched since the "fruit" desired is the Hispanic vote, rather than the nomination of Sotomayor being a natural outgrowth of the tree of Latino votes.
But the idea of one elephant manning a two man saw makes the point well enough. Whatever the task, Republicans ain't up to it.

10. snowe and collins were members of the gang of 14 -- they're not going to support a filibuster

Even if they decided to vote against her confirmation (which I doubt) they won't support a filibuster, just as every one of the Democratic members of the Gang of 14 voted for cloture on Alito, even though all but two (byrd and nelson) then turned around and voted against his confirmation.

In fact, it will be interesting to see what McCain does if there is a cloture vote. He also was a member of the gang of 14 and he is a "maverick-y" guy, right? Plus, he's up for re-election in 2010 in a state with a growing Hispanic population.
