Supreme Court Nominee Should Be Closely Questioned On Church-State Views, Says Americans United

The Senate Judiciary Committee should thoroughly question Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor to determine her views on church-state separation, says Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

President Barack Obama today announced the nomination of Sotomayor, currently a judge on the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, to the high court. It appears that Sotomayor has not written widely on church-state issues, meaning the committee has an obligation to ascertain her views.

“We hope Judge Sotomayor turns out to be in the mold of retiring Justice David H. Souter – a strong champion of separation of church and state,” said Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United. “The American people deserve no less.”

2. Umm... Obama, in my adult life, is the second president to viciously attack the separation.

3. How is he attacking the separation of church and state?

Last I checked, there weren't Anti-Atheist Death Squads, there was no state religion, there was no public denunciation of non-Christians as "subhumans", and there was no push to do any of this from anyone in the Obama administration or the man himself.

There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that Barack Obama disapproves of the separation of church and state and you're just making shit up out of whole cloth if you claim otherwise.

5. I wouldn't characterize it as a vicious attack on Church/State separation...

but I wish he would have put the kibosh on Faith-based initiative/programs; how Judge Sotomayor interprets Church/State issues could effect SCOTUS decisions regarding the way in which the programs may continue to function.

I find that question quite relevant.
