Poll question: During a speech at a $30,000-a-plate dinner, President Obama ...
Edited on Thu May-28-09 07:10 PM by ColbertWatcher
... made a remark about protesters outside the Beverly Hills Hilton:
"There were some protesters out here. I could hear them-vaguely. I don't know what they were protesting. I think there was a group of them. But one of them started to chant "Obama, keep your promise" and I thought, that's fair. I don't know which promise that he was talking about. But I thought to myself, you know, I like that."

--Daily Kos

From the selections below, choose the answer that best describes how you feel about his remark.

(EDITED TO ADD BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE) There is more to the quote, but no transcript of his full remarks have been found.

Here is a http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/05/27/obama-rings-up-cash-among-the-stars/?scp=2&sq=beverly%20hilton&st=cse">link to the New York Times coverage of his remarks.

Perhaps the DNC will one day post a full quote on their website?

(EDITED AGAIN) Full quote posted, with source for transcript.

1. Here's the ENTIRE QUOTE for those who haven't read it:
There were some protesters out here. I could hear them-vaguely. I don't know what they were protesting. I think there was a group of them. But one of them started to chant "Obama, keep your promise" and I thought, that's fair. I don't know which promise that he was talking about. But I thought to myself, you know, I like that.

You are going to be so embarrassed by this post in like 2 hours. You're acting defensive and deliberately dense.

140. I'm always impressed...
When anyone has the integrity and fortitude to apologize for what is, in reality, a minor issue at best.

I don't care that we may not agree.

It doesn't matter that I've always had respect for your positions whether we've disagreed or not.

It matters that you've always shown that you are willing to step back and take an objective look, right or wrong (I honestly can't remember thinking you were 'wrong', but I might have), at your position, your words, and the rationale of other posters who may disagree with you.

This trait that I have so much respect for is sadly lacking in so many these days.

Thank you for being a better person, I hope I would have the fortitude to do the same.

Wow. Pretty cool, Colbertwatcher.

This is what the "outrage" is about? Are you people serious? Apologize? For what? There are real reason to be angry at the President, but something like this is absolutely absurd. This right here is some rehashed primary bull shit. I say get out of your homes and get a life. The real outrage would be if Obama actually does apologize for this non-issue

I'm sure the President had enough people around him to keep track of all the groups protesting.

His mind is agile enough that he can keep all those different groups straight (no pun intended).

It's not like he is expecting people to have one issue to protest. After all, he doesn't do that.

110. Actually, the transcript from Daily Kos (which has been added to the OP) ...
... has one more bit after that to complete the full remark.

One more thing, I asked google for the quote and posted what I found.

The people replying said I didn't post the full quote. At first not providing any links to the full quote, then posting links to videos, which may be good for a while, but often disappear.

I prefer transcripts.

That's what caught my eye, not some lame joke. In times like these... and with an election over three years away - hell, he just finished his first 100 days!!! - people with $30k to burn get access to the President while the rest of us do not. To me, that's a problem far greater than anything that happened on the sidelines. Are we officially a pay-for-play, banana republic?

That is something that cannot be discounted.

The factual evidence lends itself neither to a 'self-effacing', nor 'smart ass' attitude. On face value, he admitted that he didn't know what it was about, but that he liked it.

As a Constitutional Scholar, it is fair to believe that he asserted a pro-democracy stance.

If you choose to believe otherwise, you are welcome to do so... and Obama would like that too.

Then again maybe he effaces everything he says because he stands for nothing. And maybe that's why no one trusts him or reads him negatively. They know it very well may be one of those times he's screwing them over to "reach across the aisle" and embrace the political enemy. Embrace the enemy enough and you become indistinguishable from it.

Of all the assessments, this entire sub-thread seems to be the most spot on.

But he has to be aware of the Prop 8 decision, and he has to know that one of the groups outside was there because of that, and that many of these people are hurting a lot. In light of that alone I think the situation called for more tact than a flippant remark, even one directed at himself.

There were three groups of protesters, all with very different agendas in front of the venue.

Or was Obama supposed to use his X-Ray vision and super-attenuated hearing to determine which group was chanting which slogan?

I'm sorry--this IS a stretch. Particularly in the context of the full comments.

112. There was AT LEAST three groups protesting.
He doesn't need super powers not bestowed upon him by the freepers who dismissively call him "Messaiah," all he needs to do is ask anyone in his staff to keep him informed.

His remark was flippant and he needs to apologize for it--just like he did for his unfortunate remark about Nancy Reagan.

117. More than three groups? All the more reason for him--or his staff--not to
try to sort out the wheat from the chaff.

His purpose at that venue wasn't to address the protesters (even though you seem to think it was). His purpose was to address those who were donating to the party. Politicians actually do fundraise--it's not a secret, it's not a surprise. There was enough exhortation here on DU to donate to politicians during the primaries--but the beat goes on (with the Big Spenders, especially) even in the off-years. Commercial airtime ain't cheap.

His remark wasn't flippant. Or, let me put it more accurately, since that's a problem here--his remarkS were not flippant, so long as one doesn't take them out of context and try to flog them in an inaccurate way to foment an aggrieved response.

You're determined to be angry with him though, so you'll never see his comments as anything but fippant, and you'll even dabble at truncating them to make them appear, in writing, all the more so--it suits your POV, for whatever reason. That's certainly telling.

120. Don't try to guess my emotional state, or, more accurately, stop projecting.
Your response has a lot of words in it, but misses the big point: he is the President and people will protest wherever he goes.

He's got to know that.

And, we the people, will protest or, at the very least, try to get his attention.

You may not believe his remark was flippant, but it was.

He knows it was and he should apologize for it, just like he apologized to Nancy Reagan.

121. You're the one who is the projection expert--describing Obama as "flippant" when the tapes
don't show that at all. You are projecting your ideas about Obama's attitude during his remarkS, and they're at variance with reality.

I simply don't agree with you. I find your analysis completely flawed and your effort to "edit" what he actually said indicative of an agenda that is not congruent with veracity.

You have a "belief" but it doesn't match the evidence that my eyes and ears experienced. I don't think. as you insist, that Obama "knows" his remark(s) were flippant, either--if you'd watch the tape, it's obvious that they weren't. His remarks were light and friendly.

You're not going to get me to change that view by simply insisting that I am "projecting" and complaining that I use too many words to suit you.

I'm not projecting (weak argument, often used when no other is viable). I'm stating simple facts. I don't see Obama addressing protesters "everywhere he goes," either. Sure, protesters are part of the landscape--that doesn't mean he must drop what he's doing and attend to them instead of the purpose for his presence at a particular venue--and in this instance, that wasn't going to happen. They were outside, he was indoors.

But the "Big Point"--if we're going to be straightforward, here--is that you substantially edited what Obama said to prosecute a POV you held. You committed the great big Sin of Omission. When people do that sort of thing, and get called on it, they lose credibility. You did it to yourself, now. No one did it to you.

122. When he made the Nancy Reagan remark no one saw/heard anything flippant, but ...
... he apologized anyway.

Because while it may seem fine for you and me to say, the President doesn't talk like that.

124. The only person trying to equate that remark with these remarks is you.
Wonder why that is?

Perhaps....gee, because they have absolutely NOTHING in common? Could that be it?

Why, golly--I do think that's it!

And sorry--you don't get to decide how the President talks. If you did, you'd be taken to task by every living citizen for the shitty job you did after the 2000 election up until this Democratic administration took over.

131. You asserted you did, though. You're apparently easily fascinated, too--by your own comments.

133. I'm sorry. I wasn't agreeing with you.
I was just shocked that someone would post something like that given the 8 years of Dumbass.

The President is held to a higher standard. This is why we Dems picked an educated person with the intellectual curiosity missing from the previous occupant and why the GOP put an airhead one very old heartbeat away from the Presidency.

I want my President to know how to pronounce "nuclear" and not make jokes about serious things. I expect my President to know when he has made mistakes and apologize for them when he does.

136. You're the one getting declarative about how the president should or should not talk.
I pointed out that if you're taking it on as a chore, you fell down on the job for the last eight years.

And now you are over-analyzing. Shocked? Please. I was "shocked" that you tried to "edit" Obama's words, and only pulled back when a bunch of people jumped on you for it. It was blatant. I'll give you credit for realizing that you played it too hard, and corrected your agenda-laden OP, but you still persisted in trying to sell an abbreviated POV. That's just not a terribly honest way of approaching a discussion.

You have a nice night, now.

130. $30K a plate pretty much made my brain turn off. The base of the "have mores"
that Bush referred to. Disgusting and emblematic of everything wrong with our political system.

151. Class war. Hollywood can afford it, but not the gay folks on the street swamped in legal bills
and all sorts of issues that a simple legal transaction could remedy.

I agree. $30K a plate said it all.

I've seen a few other stories that said the cost was $30,400 per couple.

157. uggh... when will the faux outrage end?!
Some of you can't be serious! And why is the cost of the dinner mentioned as if previous Presidents didn't have expensive dinners/fundraisers? Tired of the double standards!

Faux outrage!

!

Sorry, now that we have a president who can pronounce "nuclear," we can raise the expectations as well.

He made a dismissive remark, he can apologize for it. I think he's up to it.
