I had a great class on the anthropology of food and food related practices in university last year, and we spent some time exploring mortuary cannabialism among the Wari people. I came out of that being far more disgusted by the fact that missionaries associated with New Tribes and agents of the Brazilian government looking to pacify them so that they could plunder the Amazon exposed them to new pathogens and made them dependent on the government for food and other necessities. I had already been aware of New Tribes' activities in Latin America because they were the Pat Robertson-associated missionary that Hugo Chavez had expelled from Venezuela for reasons that should be obvious to anyone who both politically aware and not brain dead, and that class only cemented my support for Chavez's decision. If only more leaders had the nerve to stand up to the far-right in general and fundamentalism in particularly. You guys have to settle for pink tutu wimps like Pelosi and Rangel telling America what a great guy Chimpy is compared to the tyrant Chavez. There are very good, progressive people in the Democratic Party. But there are also people who are bought and sold and who are lying to you. The Republicans are far more lacking in decency and honesty than the Democrats, however.
