Gingrich, of all the Sotomayor bashers, thinks this is a good strategy for some reason.

Anyone who's read Rick Perlstein's Nixonland would probably come to the same conclusion. I'm guessing he believes that making Sotomayor--and as many latino/a nominees and issues--a symbokl of the end of white anglo-American civilization as we know it is a winning strategy for the GOP. Of course he could be the buffoon he seems to be. But if he's the genius he's often made (himself) out to be in the media, there is probably some reason for him to feel this is a safe tack to take. He is probably betting that the damage to the GOP from fleeing latinos will be more than made up for by a consolidation of the white vote, especially in states like North Carolina and Virginia.

I think he is wrong, I think he is an ass and a buffoon, and he'll be sorry. But almost certainly he is making a Nixonian calculation. (Mind you, Nixon was thought a genius too, and look at where his genius got him.)

1. temporary, at best
even if that happened (which i doubt), it would last for only a few elections. But, then, the GOP has always been good at going for temporary gains (see the alliance with the fundamentalist right

2. He thinks it's 1993 again...
and the Southern White strategy will work for the GOP again.

Not likely.

3. I'm guessing that they're thinking, all they have to do is win two elections
And they'll be back in a position to keep manipulating the system in their favor. And if that's what they're thinking, they're right. But the question is, does this win them even one election? The out party usually wins the midterms. Will it this time? We'll have to see. I personally think they are making some of the most boneheaded plays I've seen in politics in my life.

4. That would be a great strategy except for one thing: Hispanics are the fastest growing population
in the U.S. and will outnumber whites by 2030.

Other than that, it's a great strategy.

5. He'll be dead by 2030 anyway.
He's only thinking as far as 2012 at this point.

I think he's making the major mistake of gambling against the very strong possibility that he and his anglo pals are going to piss off enough latinos into getting franchised to work against them.

There are about 630K Latinos/nas here now, about 10 times the number from 1993.

I don't know what % of those folks are legal, but still, they do have relatives who vote.
