Los Angelenos, check this out!
A couple hours ago I was buying groceries in Albertson's. (I live in the West SF Valley.)

I saw a vivacious and attractive young African-American woman behind a little kiosk in the store.

She wasn't handing out free food samples, so I tried to slide right past her. Figuring there was some Deep Marketing going on.

Wasn't quite quick enough. She asked me to "enter a contest to win free groceries."

And subscribe to the L.A. TIMES.

Oh. So that's the catch.

I told her I cancelled my subscription to the TIMES years ago and was not interested in a new sub.

She said something like: "I bet you think the paper is too liberal, huh?"

"Nope. Too conservative."

"Are you kidding? Why do you think the TIMES is too conservative?"

"The TIMES harassed Bill Clinton for 8 years. It replaced the great political cartoonist Conrad with the untalented right-wing hack Michael Ramirez...bla, bla, bla..."

She finally shook her head and said: "I gotta tell my boss about this. You are the FIRST person who ever said the TIMES was too conservative."

That was fun!

Op-Ed pieces by that CFR neo-con hack Max Boot.

11. I originally thought those were satire
I mean, "Max Boot" - it's like something out of the Onion

I didn't believe anyone could really believe that crap AND take on the pen name "Max Boot"

12. I grant that, as a nom de plume, 'Max Boot'
sounds like something straight from the "Goebbels Diaries."

The Boot pieces do read much better as satire!

2. I cancelled mine right after the 2000 election when they
ran a puff piece about Laura Bush on the same page as a scathing hit piece on Hillary Clinton.

5. Ramirez got fired about five years ago
I had the pleasure of sitting with him at a charity event right after his firing. He was a big dick, no fun, complained about the food and service. Knowing he was recently fired I set him up and asked him what happened at the Times? He told me it was because the Times was a Liberal rag. I commented, maybe it is because you are such a prick! He left shortly after that.

6. I dumped the LA Times in '06 when they destroyed the local news section
it's a right wing rag these days.

Oh, did you remind her that it's owned by a bunch of wingnuts?

7. No, but I should have!
I knew it was owned by the Sun-Times gruppen for a few years, which I guess is no longer true. But I'm way behind on local news. I was living in Egypt from Oct. 2005 until this past March.

Two friends of mine worked at the Daily News a few years ago, when it was still owned by the McClatchy chain. They were both flaming liberals, though that POS paper has always been somewhat to the right of Goebbels. They left because the wife got a job at another notorious "liberal" paper, the New York TIMES.

I guess the Daily Snooze is still pushing the Valley Secession movement. They've always had delusions of being a major newspaper in L.A. On that little project, they are working hand-in-glove with the far-right Boeckmann family (owners of Galpin Ford). The Boeckmanns want to run the Valley as their own personal little fiefdom. Asshats.

9. LAT was owned by the Tribune Corp (out of Chicago), not
the Sun Times.

N.B. LAT was part of Times-Mirror Corp when TMC was acquired by Tribune Corp.

I mark the beginning of the most recent period of decline to the Trib's acquisition of TMC. Otis Chandler is spinning in his grave!

10. Amazing! I had a similar conversation at a Ralph's in Venice/Marina Del Rey
This was about 6 years ago. The guy trying to sell me the subscription was a republican dick, so I told him to fuck off.

Deja vu all over again.
