Homeless Man Faces Murder Charges In Lee County Incident

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A southwest Florida homeless man brutally beheaded a wheelchair-bound man who was letting the suspect stay at his apartment, deputies said.

Lee County Sheriff's deputies went to Charles Rogers' home Thursday and found his body still in the wheelchair. His head was placed near the front door.

Authorities said Robert Cope was staying with 70-year-old Rogers. Neighbors said Rogers was a Good Samaritan type who often helped people.

A home health care provider identified Cope as the man who had been staying with Rogers.

Cope's shoe prints were found at the scene. Authorities also found blood on his shoes when they arrested him.

2. Didn't a poster on here just let a homeless person move in with them?
As much as I can appreciate the notion, this case isn't the first Ive heard of this happening. When I was young, a local couple picked up a man, took him out to lunch, and brought him back to their house. They were dead by the morning.

Despite one's views of poverty and homelessness, they should also have realistic views of mental illness (which often causes chronic homelessness). Mental illness and homelessness doesn't make "bad" people, but they can most certainly do "bad" things on occasion.

4. I'm guessing there was some untreated mental illness involved here
I could be wrong.

My one RW friend was cheering the budget cuts in PA. One of them is for programs to the Mentally Ill.

I said, I pray that these programs don't take medicine away from people who have decided to be drug compliant and rejoin society.

Most mentally ill people who are off medicine are harmless but the few that aren't and are hallucinating can do some real damage.
