http://www.newsroomamerica.com/politics/story.php?id=456993President Barack Obama said Thursday he has lost confidence in the inspector general assigned to oversee the AmeriCorps and other national service programs and informed Congress he will replace him.
The move follows IG Gerald Walpin's investigation of Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, an Obama supporter and former NBA star, into the alleged misuse of federal grants by a nonprofit education group that Johnson headed.
The acting U.S. attorney for Sacramento criticized the way in which Walpin handled the investigation into Johnson and St. HOPE Academy, which receives hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal grants the Corporation for National Community Service, which runs the AmeriCorps program.
"It is vital that I have the fullest confidence in the appointees serving as Inspectors General," Obama said in a letter Thursday to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Vice President Joe Biden, who also serves as president of the Senate. "That is no longer the case with regard to this Inspector General."
