Lilly Sold Zyprexa Drug for Dementia Knowing It Didn't Help
Lilly Sold Zyprexa Drug for Dementia Knowing It Didn't Help, Files Reveal Eli Lilly & Co. urged doctors to prescribe Zyprexa for elderly patients with dementia, an unapproved use for the antipsychotic, even though the drugmaker had evidence the medicine didn’t work for such patients, according to unsealed internal company documents.

3. The level of greed is astounding.
Thank Dog Lilly is partnering with other giant health-related companies to ensure we get the best possible health care reform. I'd be far more worried if it were in the hands of some liberal, progressive, socialist-leaning group.

4. I think
Edited on Sat Jun-13-09 05:04 PM by Confusious
When companies do this sort of shit, they should be fined ALL PROFITS FROM CRIMINAL ACTIVITY (this being criminal) AND PAY A FINE.

That'll stop this shit.

You know, if you rob a bank, they don't say "keep the money and pay a fine plus go to jail", so you have it sitting there when you get out. They take it AND throw your ass in jail. They should do the same with corporations.

Double standard in this country.

5. Side Effects
Zyprexa side effects
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop using Zyprexa and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

*
fever, stiff muscles, sweating, fast or uneven heartbeats;
*
jerky muscle movements you cannot control;
*
sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body;
*
sudden headache, confusion, problems with vision, speech, or balance;
*
increased thirst, frequent urination, excessive hunger, or weakness;
*
feeling light-headed, fainting;
*
unusual thoughts or behavior, hallucinations, or thoughts about hurting yourself; or
*
nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

Less serious Zyprexa side effects may include:

*
dizziness, drowsiness, or weakness;
*
constipation;
*
dry mouth;
*
swelling in your hands or feet;
*
back pain;
*
weight gain, increased appetite; or
*
upset stomach.

This is not a complete list of side effects

My mom-in-law was put on that garbage unbeknown to my husband who is her power of attorney in all matters. She was in the middle stages of Alzheimer's at the time. She had what they call a less serious side effect, she stood up and became dizzy. She then fell and broke her hip. Not to mention it made her really, really angry and combative for the short time she was on it. She was taken off as soon as hubby found out she was on it and she immediately starting doing a lot better. That was about 5 years ago. She is still around and although the disease has progressed she is doing pretty darn good and not taking any medications of any kind.

6. It doesn't work and has deadly side effects
"The company also noted that three patients taking Zyprexa died during a study or within 30 days of its completion, while only one control-group patient expired, according to the unsealed documents."

7. If I remember correctly, Zyprexa was used for some time in state
mental hospitals in PA. They use huge amounts of these types of drugs, MUST change drugs periodically even if the current treatment is effective.
Politicians made the laws affecting treatment of patients, and what doctore can and cannot do.

Guess who gives money to the politicians.

should I be concerned? Just a "newbie" on it, did research but I am sure I may have missed something.

9. it may be fine -- it's used & been tested as an anti-manic drug, right?
It's the off label use in (mostly elderly) dementia patients that's the problem.

Ask your doc or pharmacist (better yet) to look into it, as well.

10. laylah, if it is working for you without bad effects, you are good...
DO NOT stop any psych med without your DR's OK - many of them must be changed slowly and as people said, for its intended use - anti-manic- it works well. People react diferently to different drugs - the problems I saw in the hospitals resulted from a "drug flavor of the year - one size fits all" approach.

Please, if you have questions or problems with any of your meds, talk with your doctor at least to just ease your mind. It is always a good idea to do this just so you make your doctor aware of any problems or worries you may have.
I am sorry if I was't clear in my first post.
Good luck to you.

11. That is one of the intended uses. Dementia never was.
But as Mark says, if you have a question about your meds, ask your doctor.

Will call my pharmacist today. Feeling very good on the med but it never hurts to look into such stuff further.

Again, my thanks :hug:

14. Here's an article on Zyprexa that was in Rolling Stone.
They were trying to pawn this stuff off on anyone who looked at their doctor cross eyed.

17. My mother has taken two of the dementia drugs
both were great for 2-5 weeks and then she became depressed and had additional side effects.

Wish someone would come up with the perfect one. : (
